I just got back from Photobin in DVD format several dozen old home movies my family i had sent away to get converted. They were a mix of Hi8, MiniDV, and VHS tapes.
I'd like to rip all these to file and store them locally and online on the cloud somewhere.
Any suggestions on the best way to do this? I looked at handbrake but I'm not sure what settings will preserve the quality in the best way.... if anyone has the right settings or another good program, that would be great. These are older video formats, so I'm not going to get HD from any of them, but I would like the highest quality export I can get ... ideally I'd like to end up tossing all the physical media into the trash and just keep my digital copies.
As far as uploading videos, I was thinking Vimeo, but it doesn't seem easy to share to non-Vimeo people. I'd rather not have the movies be public. I do want them shareable with friends / family. Perhaps YouTube, although I think they have a 10 minute limit still? Are there any other good solutions? I use Picasa to manage my pictures, but I haven't found any similar tool for videos.
