  1. Hi, I am planning on buying a new DVD player to play SVCD and VCD's and I was wondering which Apex to buy. 1500, 1200 or the 1100W one.

Which would be best to play SVCD and VCD since they are all around the same price.

    Thanks in advance

Oh yeah, if one of them is out, which would be the next best to get?

    Thanks again.

  2. I recently bought the 1100W one (don't know about the others) and it plays just about everything I throw at it (straight mpg files, jpg pictures as a slide show, I believe I even did an AVI although I have no idea how it could do it).

be sure to by the one that has the 05 at the end of the serial number. You can then go to other sites and get information on other things that will allow your dvd player to do things it normally cannot

Another thing, my dvd player will play overburned CD's whereas other dvd players that I have tested on will not (3rd cd from spiderman is overburned and WILL NOT play on the 5 dvd players I tested it on, nor will it play on my computer).

  3. I bought an 1100W first, just to verify that I was going to be able to generate good quality DVD back-ups that would actually play. It suffices, ghastly remote notwithsatanding, and is appropriate value and features for the money. I use it to check out burns before file deletion. Then I went and bought the carousel model 5131, since in practice, this is with the sound system and large TV and will be used more frequently for playing movies etc . A few more bucks , but a much more robust construction...and oh yes, although I have never before, bought the 3 yr extended warranty from Circuit City , since the reliabaility of these great value machines is somewhat suspect.

  4. I would go with the apex 1500. Not because it is the player that I have, but because of all the forums I have been on, the apex 1500 seems to give the least problems and the most compatibility with non standart formats. So long as I encode at 29.97fps and demux and remux as svcd, it will play resolutions such as 352x480, 480x480, 704x480, 740x480, and of course, 352x240.

    I LOVE MY APEX 1500!

My brother has the 1100 model. It plays everything I throw at it as well but not as smooth.

  6. I have experienced ALL 3 and the AD-1500 is the best BY FAR!!! I returned both the 1100 & 1200 due to it not playing some media as smoothly. The 1500 plays DVD-Rs just great while the others had many problems.

  7. I was looking at the 1500 from amazon, but was wondering what the odds were that I'd get a hackable version. Anyone order from them and get a hackable one or an unhackable one?

    I'd wait.

    I have a 1500, it's outstanding so far. But...

    * the 1600 comes out soon (and you can buy it on Amazon already) and it's basically a 1500 with a better remote, added AVI & Windows Media support, and a nicer shell. It's $80 to the 1500's $50, but still.

    * the 2500 comes out after that, and it's a 1600, plus an even NICER case and remote, and added AVI & Windows Media Player, Kodak PhotoCD, HDCD, Karaoke, AND progressive scan, component out, and more bells and whistles. It's just silly. Fuckin' thing will play an oatmeal cookie if you need it to.

I plan to pick up a 2500 when I see it on store shelves.
In the meantime if you want a 1500 for now (and it ain't like you can't use it later in another room, and at that price, hey...) then get it at Fry's Electronics, where you can pick and choose your serial number from the stack of boxes they will have of them in stock.

Go to www.apexdigitalinc.com for more on the new models. Look under DVD players, then "upcoming DVD players"...

  9. Thanks Mike
Too bad there is no Fry's here. How'd you get the apex 1500 at 50 bucks? Is there anyother way to get that price besides Fry's?
    Thanks

  10. Ken - I highly doubt you will find a hackable 1500 this late in the game.

mpb - Are you referring to the 2100 and not the 2500? Or is there also a 2500 coming out? I say this because there is a 2100 that just came out and does all the things you say and also looks nicer than the 1600.

  11. Should also say that the website in question says Kodak Picture Cd, and not PhotoCd, a whole other animal.
    Nothing if not difficult

I have Pioneer DV 444 and Apex AD-703 and so far Apex is very durable player and I hacked firmware to make it universal player with all goodies under loop hole. I am planning to get Apex AD 2500. I saw the player available around May and all of sudden pull out from listing at both buy.com and amazon. Now nowhere to be found. It initial selling price of $125 is higher than most single disc apex player but I think it worth paying for. That one is latest bad a$$ player. Anyone heard about Xbox's Dvix playing capability? I am planning to buy modded Xbox with linux and Dvix player installed at www.liksang.com before Bill gate slap the hands of Hong Kong dealer.
