I saw the commercial for the Green Latern bluray and it had the ULTRAVIOLET tag on the cover. I remembered that was supposed to be coming soon so I went to google, found it and signed up.

Only thing is you can't do anything with it yet. Nothing.

Isn't this supposed to be your one stop cloud service needs? I thought you were supposed to be able to authenticate your own video library and tap into it over the net.

Is it still in beta? Is it going to be xbox 360 and ps3 compatible?

    When does it do something?

Can you really load your own dvd library and stream it anywhere? Or was that more pipedreams?
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

In theory, and I say "in theory" because until it actually gets released I cannot report this as facts, it's supposed to allow you to stream digital copies of a movie you purchase to something like up to 12 different devices. Devices can be computers, mobile phones, pads, etc. You have to register each device with the service to stream to it.

UltraViolet will NOT let you upload to it. It simply a digital rights management system and NOT a storage locker. It's mostly seen as a replacement for those pointless "digital copies" that have expiration dates and just ended up pissing everybody off because they expire. It sounds better than digital copies, but this is Hollywood that we are talking about so if there is any way to make the service hard to use or useless or actually more DRMed than anything ever was before, Hollywood will find a way to do it.

Disney is the only major studio not onboard with Ultraviolet. They have their own alternative which has also yet to be released.

It wasn't uploading that I was thinking of. When it was initially reported I thought it was supposed to let you get digital access to physical discs you already owned via some sort of authentication - my thinking was along the lines of netflix or amazon instant video with proof you owned a print copy and could access the streaming version with authentication.

That makes more sense to me now. Worse thing about those digital copies is you couldn't even ACTIVATE them if you bought it after the initial release of the disc. It should have been a year or two access from any time AFTER activation. Not some predetermined window from the date of release of the disc itself.

You mean something along the lines of rootkit gate 2.0? Sony is a player in this thing isn't it?

Thanks jman98. I guess I'll temper my enthusiasm for this service even more.

  4. There's no benefit to you at all. It's all about Hollywood controlling what you can watch and when.

Not to mention that "Ultraviolet" is such a misleading and unimaginative name.
