Hi, my problem is I don't have a firewire card on my computer so the only way I can get my videos from my DV camera onto my computer is through USB streaming. I've done some extensive searching and the only program that seems to do this for me is Ulead Video Studio. Any other program I try to use only lets me stream with an i.Link cable.

My problem is the quality goes down greatly when using Ulead. When I watch my movies with my camera connected to my TV the quality is pretty much perfect. I don't want to accept the crud video quality I'm getting right now when it plays fine on my TV.

If anyone could tell me of any programs and/or guides that could help me capture HQ video from a DV camera by USB streaming that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

The quality goes down because USB streaming is usually webcam quality (352x240 vs 720x480 for Firewire).

You should install a Firewire port.

Alternative is to capture S-Video analog with a capture device.

Ok well i might have to invest in firewire then, thanks. Also, do you know of any other programs that will let me stream through USB apart from Ulead, maybe a program with more options.

USB connection to camcorders requires proprietary drivers. There is no standard. USB camcorders (e.g. DVD-ROM, HDD, some AVCHD and almost all digital cameras) ship software drivers and capture programs on a CD with the product. You need to use those.

Don't expect third party software to support these products unless they make a big deal of it (e.g. Sony Vegas supporting Sony DVD-ROM camcorders).

ULead is detecting your camcorder as a Video for Windows webcam.

They are so cheap (a few tens of dollars) that it will pay for itself in no time when you consider the headaches saved.

Most programs that support the older Video for Windows drivers will see your cam as a 352/240 webcam. Try Virtualdub (free) or Windows Movie Maker. This may depend on codecs loaded.

If your laptop has an express card slot, buy one of these

If it doesn't, use a different computer for DV capture or capture analog.

There is no such thing as a USB to DV Firewire cable. All a scam.
