Hi friends 25 days of extreme disappointment so will come directly to the problem
I shot a short film on Sony HD although the files recorded as shown by Gspot, the video attributes program are .......DVD "VOB" format,mpeg-2 program stream,1 video 1 audio,720*576,average bitrate - 8753 and frame rate is 25 frames......
The no. of total recorded files is around 400,and I imported around 50 in a premiere pro project, after 13 mins of edit it started showing 'memory low' and 'failed to allocate memory' errors,to import these original clips I had installed a mpeg 2 video codec 'main concept mpeg pro' trial version which leaves a logo on the video that's it........
Now neither the video is getting rendered not can I proceed with editing as in both cases it shows memory error.......
My OS is windows xp,hard disk is 1 TB,Ram is 2 gb,which I tried to increase upto 4 GB but it continued giving error,
I increased the virtual memory upto 10 GB,it continued
I changed Rendering option in premiere to 'memory' it didn't work
so I decided to convert all the files to AVI as I had earlier edited some projects in AVI
but this time I tried virtual dub with all option, fox converter with all option and other programs too but all in vain as the resulting file is always shorter in width than the original mpeg.......16:9 becomes shorter with two black lines on both the sides which I don't want.....specially when I import these files in premiere the difference is obvious,as shown in the screen captures I'm posting
I'm very very depressed as it had a deadline which I have crossed today.....
1)how should I convert mpeg2 to AVI without change in aspect ratio and with which software
2)Is there a way to use premiere pro as a batch converter of these original files as conversion through premiere from mpeg2 to AVI is without change in aspect ratio and clean but I don't know how to do it in batch
3) would premiere accept all AVI files in place of old files and replace old files automatically if I delete the previous files folder and instead put this converted folder but will the names remain same on conversion except the extension?
4) Is there a way that I can work in premiere pro with 2 gb ram on this project.......?
5) also when the error says system low on memory, does it refer to your system C drive or the drive in which the data or files folder and project files are present.......
Plz help I have come here after everything I could think of with my limited knowledge
plz help........thankyou.

AVI doesn't really support aspect ratios. But certain codecs within AVI have private aspect ratio information that other programs can see. If you really need to convert to AVI your best bet is DV AVI. You can use Cedocida in VirtualDub. Most programs can read the aspect ratio information from those and handle appropriately.
I don't use Premiere but you can probably override what it thinks of the display aspect ratio of your current AVI file. It's usually done by right clicking on the source video in the timeline and selecting an "aspect ratio" or "source properties" option. -
right now premiere "thinks" the footage uses square pixels, but you are not.
right click the clip in the clip bin and interpret the footage, there you can choose the aspect ratio 16:9
PS you probably would have figured it out yourself on the 26th day -
I don't know how you Premiere people can work in this kind of chaos. That's part of the problem. How on earth can you find anything? Settings are scattered everywhere.

Ha ha look at how you guys are rejoicing my plight.......
I understood what you are saying but if I just right click and change the aspect ratio. the problem remains the same that I'm stuck, I still can't edit or render the already edited work due to memory problem.....if I convert these mpeg2 files to smaller avi files and again import them in the project with same names which I have seen, does work.....can you suggest me a very good free mpeg2 to AVI converter which retains the aspect ratio as well doesn't deteriorate the quality that much..........all converters I tried including virtual dub, fox, streamclip give me either a bigger file or shaky video........ -
If you can't edit Mpeg2, then you're hosed. The levity introduced above is a direct result of this insight. No amount of help will improve your situation, therefore the jest.
No offense intended.

VirtualDub + Field Delay filter + Cedocida. Your file will grow bigger because DV is less compressed than MPEG.

Yes, converting to DV-AVI is a good option. I see that you are on a P4 ....
It's accepted natively in all versions of premiere, and you don't get that red render bar (everything won't need to be converted internally), editing will be smoother
Other options:
You can upgrade to CS5 which is 64-bit and can access more memory (you will need to upgrade, hardware as well as OS)
Or divide up the project into segments
Or use a proxy workflow, where the files are low res, low quality, low memory and swap back to full quality files on final render (render out in segments) -
And you should set the decompression color depth in VirtualDub to 4:2:2 YCbCr (YUY2) or else it may screw up the chroma channels.
