Ok I have defended the Special Editions time and again - most of the Special Editions - I guess I'm on the fence about the whole Greedo shooting first bit - its not as big of a deal to me as other fanatics.

But this is not right. Vader screaming NOOO! in Return of the Jedi when the Emperor is trying to kill Luke? He should have done that change in the "first" special edition release not now.

Does anyone remember that when the "first" special edition release came out they had Luke screaming as he let go of the weather vane thing inside Cloud City after he rejected Vaders offer? This was in the video tape release but was removed from the dvd release and rightfully so - Jedis don't scream. So why is Vader screaming now?

Was Lucas so short on time in making Jedi the first time that he couldn't have done a few retakes of that scene and tried it with and without the screaming? He could have dubbed it in the editing of Jedi before the world ever saw.

This change makes no sense to me.

The one that does impress me though is that they redid the Yoda puppet in Phantom Menace. They put in all digital work for Yoda in Phantom Menace. For those who remember there Phantom Menace dvd commentary and paid attention there was a digital Yoda in one scene at the end of the original Phantom Menace. THat was when he was talking to Obi Wan about whether or not he could train Anakin. It was a high shot with Ewan McGregor kneeling and Yoda was walking (visible from above with out any "muppet" trickery - pure digital).

So there you have it. THis has to make the bluray edition the 4th edition of the movies (original series). The theatrical releases were 1st edition, the special edition is 2nd, then the second release of the special editions on vhs had tweaks of their own (that was when Lukes scream in Empire was removed) and the 3rd edition was the dvd release with minor tweaks like the empire text over the death star tractor beam controls that obi wan the elder releases - they used to be in english - and now we have a 4th version.

Is there any word on whether or not the laserdisc prints that were included on the second dvd release (which I have of course) received any enhancements? Are they included in the bluray set? Did they get upgraded?

He needs to take advantage of secondary audio tracks. Altered or unaltered. Or "enhanced" as they'd call it.

How about a "branching" version trailing off from the uncut original? That would be best. That way you could keep the original but switch to "enhanced" if you want. Almost like the old "choose your own adventure" stories they used to have - you know turn to page 54 to see this ending type of deal.

  4. I guess I'll keep the copies I have on D-VHS. They are the "3rd" edition of the original trilogy and the 1st edition of the prequels. So what if they are 1080i with only a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.

Yes but are these the cropped versions they show on SPIKE? I prefer oar and especially for Star Wars. I don't want anything chopped off. Just ask Luke (ie his hand AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!)

These were recorded off of premium channels back in the day like Starz HD and Cinemax HD so no commercial interruptions.

does it even make a difference anymore? i've got so many different versions i can't keep track. vhs captures, laserdisc transfers, first release dvds, second release, enhanced, corrected, new and improved. it's like freakin' dish soap at this point. who the heck wants to give lucas any more damn money for the same sub par product?

But not right away. I'll probably rent first to see how extensive the changes are. And then I'll probably only do the original trilogy. It would be nice to get just Phantom Menace on bluray however. It seems "soft" compared to 2 and 3 given that 1 was done the old fashioned way on 35mm.

i guess i must be the only guy in the world that thinks all the star wars movies are lame as hell. in all honesty, i have never watched any of them from start to finish, the closest i ever came was watching the family guy parodies of the first star wars trilogy.

but then again i actually like girls, so perhaps that plays some small part in my feelings towards the movies

  11. I foresee a future in which you will have to order your SW movies like Starbucks orders.

I would like a holo-disc of Episode 4 & Episode 6. The 4th I would like it with the new Cgi additions & Han shooting 1st. The 6th I would like with the old style Yoda puppet, the old Jedi ghosts at the bonfire and please hold the gay "no" screams.

...oh, and a side of extra footage of Leia in the slave outfit plz!.

I rented half of the blurays Friday night. Empire, Jedi and Phantom Menace. BB was out of A New Hope.

I liked em. They looked very sharp.

I actually wasn't as offeneded by the "nooo" in Jedi by Vader as I thought I would be. It was pretty settle. It wasn't ear shattering. It was settle enough that I almost didn't catch it but they did it twice so I did catch the second one. Thankfully its a quite enough yell that it isn't that jarring.

I don't think I'll be buying the bluray set for awhile. I am however working on picking up the bonus discs on ebay. I've got my hand in a couple of auctions and I should get one of em. THose are more worth it to me. Especially since I have both dvd releases - the original box set and the individual re-releases of the oriignal trilogy with the laserdisc version. I of course have each of the prequels on dvd from their first release issues also.
