  1. Is there anything free that will make this conversion?

  2. OK, I found how to convert with VLC but the result is a file that's 3kb (the mp4 is 4.5 MB). Any idea what's up with this mp4? It plays in VLC so I don't get it.

  3. So I take it that you want to grab the audio from a video file. In this case the simplest way to do this would be to split the audio from the MP4 file. For this I would use Haali Media Splitter, however there are other programs which do the same job.

The MP4 file may already have MP3 audio, however if not you will have to use a converter to get it into MP3. Many of the ffMPEG GUIs (such as Avanti) make this fairly simple.

I gave up on VLC for conversion a long time ago, it may well be all right in the right hands, however I find other software to be more logical for such work.

ah the inevitable venerable ffmpeg ... what would we do without it ?

  7. Audacity with the ffmpeg plugin should be able to import the audio directly from the MP4 file and export as MP3. If the audio is already MP3 encoded in the MP4 file you can just demux it with YAMB.

Is the original file a video file? Another method would be to open the file in AVIdemux,
set audio to Lame/mp3 (on the left), set the bitrate, and choose audio/save (at the top).
