    Hello,

I searched through the forum trying to find a similar post about the issue I'm having but didn't see anything that matched exactly. I'm hoping there might be someone out there with some advice on this issue I am having.

First off, I'm not new to burning AVCHD with Nero or IMGBurn and have never had this happen before: for some reason when I try to burn AVCHD with either program, the whole process completes as usual but when I try to watch the disc nothing happens, there's just a black screen and the disc does not respond to attempts to fast forward etc.

I'm using a PS3 to view (I watch everything on the PS3) and am using a Dell Inspiron 14r laptop with Win7 to burn.

There are not really any changes to how I'm doing this except that normally, I use my desktop (w/a custom XP OS and an older version of Nero) for all my little projects but I just moved so the desktop isn't set up.

Aside from changing the machine I'm using, the only other thing that is different is with Nero. I'm using Nero 10 and after putting in all the right settings (DVD-rom UDF, manual-physical-2.50) the one thing it does not do is warn me about burning UDF at 2.50. I figured this is just something to do with the new version of Nero.

So other than those two (seemingly innocuous) differences I cannot figure out what the problem is or if I'm doing something wrong...? The files I have are fine as well, I can direct play the .m2ts file on my laptop and I suppose I could burn it as data and watch it on the PS3 but it would be preferable to have it as a proper AVCHD.

Any help would be really great, thank you!

do older avchd discs still play on the ps3? have you changed brands of dvdr? have you tried a different avchd creating program, like avchdcoder or multiavchd?

    Thanks for responding

I'm not sure what you mean by older AVCHD... all the AVCHD I currently have still play fine. I always use Verbatim DVD's. I haven't tried AVCHDCoder since it's already made (the BDMV/CERT folders) but I have been contemplating remaking it with the m2ts from scratch :/

I'm going to have to mess around with it for now but this is such an oddity that I have never seen before I feel like I'm more curious than annoyed at having made a few Verbatim coasters.

  4. Do you verify your discs? It may be that the burning process *supposedly* completes okay, but the disc is not readable. Which would indicate crap discs (which you say can't be so) or the burner is dying.

You don't say specifically if the drive that burned the discs can actually read them. You also aren't clear as to whether you've tried to burn with ImgBurn on the new machine. I wouldn't trust Nero with AVCHDs, BTW.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

    Hello,

Sorry if I left some things unclear.

I always verify my discs and everything checked out as usual and yeah, Verbatim discs have always been the best for me, I rarely make coasters unless it's my own error or the data I'm working with.

I did try with IMGBurn too as I know Nero isn't the best I'm just used to using it and have burned AVCHD's with Nero for years. The drive I used to burn the discs plays them fine. Also, I did just recently burn a couple AVCHD's that are totally fine but I made those myself with AVCHDcoder so maybe it is these files.

At this point I'm more curious than annoyed because this has never happened before.

Well, after some mucking about with this I found, after loading the m2ts file into both TSmuxer and multiAVCHD, both progs show fps to be 50...?

I know that 25fps is PAL and normally the fps if 23.976 but 50 puzzles me because I thought that was refresh rate (50PAL and 60NTSC) but TSmuxer shows "50" in the "fps" section...

Anyway, just wanted to post an update. I'm going to try to run the m2ts file through TSmuxer and see if I can just simply change the fps (to 24) and get success that way.

Again, if anyone else has better knowledge/ideas that would be really helpful.

    Thanks for reading!

An American PS3 won't support PAL rate playback like 25 fps. This is certainly your problem. And your discs that worked before were almost certainly all 24 or 29.97 fps discs.

Converting to 24 fps is really not ideal. If you even find a way to do it successfully, you're going to notice weirdness on playback. I'd suggest that you do one of the following.
    1) Buy a region free BluRay player (hard to do AND and expensive in the USA now) that can convert 25 fps AVCHD to NTSC output.
    2) Just watch those AVCHD discs on a PC.
    3) Try to find 24 or 29.97 fps sources, if possible, for those videos.

It is possible to actually re-encode the videos to 24 fps, but you may not like the final result. Depends on how picky you are, but generally there are motion issues with this kind of conversion. They bother some more than others. And you'll have to change the audio too to match the new video. I don't know if there are any tricks for AVCHD like the old DVD trick where you could patch the frame rate to an NTSC value and some players would play it then.

    Hello, thanks for replying!

I have considered the options you listed (I wish my old Malata were HD capable, I loved it so much!) but I'm not sure I will call it a day yet. I can easily find alternate sources but whenever I do this sort of stuff like converting and so forth it's always kind of more for fun than anything, you know, and to see if I can do it.

I think I'll give re-converting a one time try maybe, and see what happens and if it's mucky like you said, which I agree it probably will be, I'll just HDMI the laptop to the TV and watch it before chucking it to the recycling bin.

Thanks again for your help! I will post if I achieve any success
