These are consecutive frames from an interlaced 1987 ntsc cam recording which my vcr transcoded to pal-m and I captured in 720x480x30 with a CX2388..

I've read lots of posts about chroma aberrations and such.. including a dreaded vertical green stripe which was almost removed with fft3d, but when I use fft3d in this video it becomes almost B&W but these beams won't get away ...

what would you do about it?

also, what's better for Dot Crawls ?

    hugs

It looks to me like the footage was recorded on a re-used tape, and your 1987 camcorder's erase head failed to completely erase the previous images when recording the new one. It is typically seen in the first few seconds after coming out of pause. It is also very common when recording VHS in the LP or EP modes.

There may be several possible options to reduce the problem, from cropping and reframing the video (at a cost of reduced detail) to hand retouching each frame (loads of work). You can search more through the Video > Restoration forum for ideas, but ultimately, the results may not be any better than just learning to live with the vertical rainbow line.

BTW, I like how you worded the title to this thread. It intrigued me enough to take a look.

  3. By playing with the saturation & selecting the coulour-distorted area in photoshop it gave me this:

compared to this there is an improvement i say

    Edit:
i recommand you do the following:
1st: clean the video with a good denoiser (neat or other)
2nd: use photoshop like i did (select the area + new adjustment layer> color/sat lower the saturation and layer mode= "color" rather than "normal" it seems better.

filmboss80: Thanks for the info.. and I knew the title would be funny
themaster1: wow nice work in photoshop!! buuuuut it happens too many times in a 2h video, it would be a pain to search and edit all of them..

I think I'll use grapesmoother() in chroma channel.. it works with sudden changes in chroma.. seems to help a bit.

Of course something more elaborated could be done.. like a descratch in chroma, with laaaarge maxgap and maxwidth.. +_+
