Hey there, I used to have an intel P3 450 mhz and could rip dvd's just fine without any random blockiness. I use smart ripper, dvd2avi, tmpgenc and tscv. My pc had an Asus motherboard, tnt2, and soundblaster live. I was completely satisfied with the results.
Now, I have an AMD 1.0 Ghz and still use the same ripping tools and have the same components. The ONLY difference is the AMD chip and motherboard. I now have a biostar motherboard. Now I get random blockiness and sound drops. Not in fast motion, but just completely random. Its only when I play the vcd I created on my standalone on the T.V. Everything looks and works fine on my Pc. I have tried many different bitrates and many different templates, soften blocknoise, everything. Nothing has worked. Is there a setting I have missed? I am completely confused now. Any help is much appreciated.

Torin,
how can we tell you if you have missed a setting, when you did not inform us which settings you have used?
Regards,The Dutchman -
I use the tmpgenc templates for the type of film it is. I leave everything as default in the templates. This worked for me when I had the Intel chip. I am trying to figure out what could cause random blockiness and sound drops when I am using exactly the same process as before only with a new processor. Smartripper>dvd2avi>tmpgenc(with provided templates)>tscv>cdrao. Do you need more info? What else would help you to identify my situation? Thanks.

Weird but somebody also posted this same comparison on DVD2SVCD website where videos encoded by Intel was better than AMD
But then I dont know as I only have Intel processor -
You´re joking when comparing AMD / Intel image quality right?...
Only the use of SSE against MMX / 3D NOW! (because ONLY ATHLON XP have SSE) can justify such comment!
SSE - Floating Point --> much more precise!
MMX / 3D NOW! - Integer
I had:
Celeron 2 800 MHz @ 1200 MHz
256 MB PC 133 SDRAM
MSI Board
GeForce 2 MX 32Mb
DVD-ROM ASUS 16x
2 MAXTOR 7200 rpm 13.6 / 20Gb HDDs
...
Now:
Athlon XP 1700+ (1460 MHz) @ 1800+ (1540 MHz)
256 MB PC 133 @ 140 MHz SDRAM (not enought money to DDR...)
Soltek Board
...
Atention!!! : I NEVER HAD AMD CPUs until now!
INTEL -> AMD Video Quality... SAME!!!
INTEL -> AMD Video Compression Speed ... MUCH MUCH MUCH FASTER!!!
In CCE speed went from 0.600-0.700 to 1.150-1.250!!!
CONCLUSION: same hardware, 340 MHz bought almost TWICE THE SPEED! -
If your problem is hardware related I would blame the board. I have had nothing but problems with Biostar and have only heard excellent comments regarding Asus.

Check Frontside Bus speed is correct for the memory you are using, and/or use faster memory.
Disable all unused motherboard devices, check for IRQ conflicts.
try disabling sound and see if blocks go away.
Comparing overclocked Celeron and AMD XP is not really apples and oranges -
Hey, I've solved my blockiness problem. I changed a couple of settings. Thanks to Nelson37, I went into my bios and disabled the onboard legacy audio and enabled my soundblaster. I then took out 64 meg of memory which was pc100 not pc133 ( don't know if that was necessary or not but it works now) Finally, I disabled the via97 audio in the device manager which in not being used on the biostar motherboard. Then I encoded and burned and what do ya know. No blocks! Thanks to everyone that helped out and a big no thanks goes to the people on the list who seem to like to rip on people for asking questions. I wish I were that cool. Hope this helps someone. Panic on.
