anyone else find amd's current Phenom 9850 a big letdown? compared to an intel q6600 it's more expensive, consumes more watts, runs hotter, scores lower in most benchmarks and doesn't overclock well.

glad i didn't wait around for them and went intel this time for my current builds.

Not only that, but they have a bug that can be fixed by a software patch that reduces the speed of some processing by between 15 and 50 %

The newer Phenoms fixed that bug, though it very rarely affected normal operation. I disabled the fix on mine and haven't noticed any problems.

I had a AM2 MB, so I bought a Phenom 9500, then upgraded the MB to a AM2+. No complaints about the Phenom, but I agree, Intel has pulled ahead in value and speed at present.
