  1. So I am new at this. I created a family video in iMovie. Shared the media so I could open it in iDVD. When I try to burn to a disc, when there is one minute left it ejects the disc and doesn't burn. I don't get any error message. The video is 79 minutes long and 2.53GB in size. Can anyone help me with this? I have no idea what is going wrong.

    79 minutes = 1hr19minutes of footage.

How much video / audio assets do you have in the way of Menus and Transitions?
if the amount of video and audio you have in transitions is more than 40 minutes,
then that could be your issue.

Also, do you have enough free space on your mac?
You didn't fill out your computers specs, so we can't tell if that may be an issue.
IDVD needs at least double the size of a DVD-5 ( 4.37GB ) of space to create
and author the DVD so you need to have at least 10GBs of free space
for it to use to write its temp files until the DVD is authored.

next, when in iMovie, did all your assets in the timeline playback fine?
Were there any weird audio or video clips that you had trouble editing?
These clips may have caused a problem in the authoring stage...go back
to iMovie, and try and play / scrub though all clips to insure there are no issues.

Last, again because we don't see your computer specs, we don't know, but
iDVD will error out if you are attempting to author a DVD on a network managed Mac
(such as in a school lab) under a network account, and not on a local account to the machine.
iDVD requires that all authoring be done on a local account to the machine that has r/w access
to the main HD of the machine.

  3. Hi

How can I find out how much memory is available on the mac?
This is a work computer. However, I tried burning at home and also at work and neither one worked for me. Same result. Could it be though because there is more than one account on this computer?
When in imovie, everything seemed to playback fine, so I don't think that would be it.

Is there any other way I can burn an iMovie file?

    Thanks for your help!

drag the "VIDEO_TS" folder onto the icon of "DVD-Player.app" to check it…
and if the contents of the disk image is playable, so you can burn it

PS an advice: when you encounter a concern, try to isolate tasks to know where is the problem

Open any Finder window, with the toolbar showing, and it should list the available disk space at the bottom (screenshot).
(Note: disk space is usually not referred to as 'memory'. 'Memory' usually means RAM. You can find the amount of system memory in /Application/Utilities/Activity Monitor, including 'used' and 'free' memory.)

If the VIDEO_TS plays, then the odds of the structure being okay are good. Eject the disk image, launch Disk Utility, and drag the disk image (.dmg) into the left side list. Click on it there. Check the size. Is it less than the size of the disc you intend to burn (single-layer/double-layer)? If so, select the disk image (in Disk Utility) and then click the "burn" button. Follow directions provided. Burn at no more than half the maximum speed you are offered. Also: Is the blank disc a "-R" or "+R"?

  7. So I have over 26GB of space free, so space shouldn't be the problem. I'll try generating the disc image, but it's going to take over 3 hours, so I don't have time to do it now. Where do I find disc utility? I'm not computer savy as you can tell!

Have you been able to get the iDVD project to "Save as Disk Image" successfully?

  12. I opened the disc image with the dvd player and it played. I was researching online and tried it as a dual layer dvd, maybe it will burn right now?

When you mount the image file and it appears as a DVD on your Desktop, select the mounted DVD (not the image file) and "get info". Check the size of the mounted image. If it's less than around 4.2GB then it should be okay to burn it to a single-layer DVD.

To burn the image, UNmount it, select it in the list on the left side of the Disk Utility window - or, if it's not there, just click the "Burn" button in DU's toolbar and, in the ensuing dialogue, navigate to and select the disk image file. Keep the speed well below the maximum permitted. When done, you should be able to play it in a set-top DVD player as well as Macs and PCs.

Let us know how it goes.

  14. So it worked! I had it clicked as a dual layer, but it burned and played on my dvd player!
