A friend of mine made a slideshow of memories with open office
(with titles and different durations for each image)

and she wanted to add music to it and wasn't able , and i said i'll do it !

she said her slideshow lasted approx:25 minutes
and the music she selected runs for about 30 minutes

i'd figured i'd go screen capture (suggested sofware ??)
and make one audio file with her 8 songs (probable with foobar2000. with audio volume normalised)

and then remuxe it all with virtualdub so framerate match

i downloaded open office , i'm now searching for a good software to capture it as is (to avi format?)
audio won't be a problem , and with virtualdub should go fine

i tried dvdslideshow and nothing happened

the goal is to burn it on cd (or dvd) (mpeg or xvid?) so her family can have it home

Virtualdub can do screen capture. Set the openoffice window to a size larger than DVD resolution. If the slideshow is 4:3 aspect ratio set the window to around 800x600. If it's 16:9, set it to 1080x608. Now use the screen capture facility in virtualdub to capture the slide show. Use something like HUFFYUV for compression since its a fast capture codec. If there's no motion in the slideshow you can set the frame rate to around 12fps and afterwards have virtualdub double the frame rate to 24fps by duplicating frames. If there is panning, zooming and animation, you should set the capture frame rate to 24fps.

Once you have the slideshow captured, open it in virtualdub, trim off anything at the beginning and end you don't want and if you used 12fps for capture, set virtualdub to "Convert" the fps to 24fps. You should now also add a resize filter to change the resolution to a DVD compatible res. Set it to 720x480. If the slideshow has a 16:9 aspect ratio, it will be squeezed horizontally, but when you make the DVD you will tell your authoring program that the source is 16:9 so it will be displayed correctly when her family watches it. Now resave the video to a new AVI using another lossless codec like HUFFYUV or Lagarith. Now you just have to prepare your audio file to have the same length as the video file and you can then import them into your DVD authoring program.

i tried camstudio , but playing the slideshow and capturing made some image transition really jerky

maybe virtualdub takes less ressources so i'll have smoother slideplay

    i tried camstudio with mjpeg

should i just set virtualdub to my display (desk) settings i run at 800X600?

i can't really chop the audio , can't i just render so audio and video duration match ?

Yes, I think setting virtualdub to capture your whole desktop set to 800x600 should be OK.

Once you capture the slideshow, open it back up in virtualdub and trim any parts from the beginning and end and resave it out to a new AVI using "Direct Copy". Then bring that new file into virtualdub and also bring in your final audio file. It should be a WAV file, virtualdub can have problems with MP3 files. I'm not familiar with foobar2000 but hopefully it can export as a WAV file. In the frame rate settings in virtualdub there's a setting to set the frame rate to match the audio length. Set this, but also set the "Convert to fps" to 24. This will change the frame rate to match the audio length then add any frames necessary to bring it up to 24fps. Add your resizing filter and save it back out to another AVI file.

If you are going to create PAL DVD's, use 25fps instead of 24fps and use an output resolution of 720x576.

  5. You write that you've tried dvdslideshow - do you mean dvd slideshow gui?

If you do, here's a video on how to convert Open Office/Impress presentation to DVD with DVD slideshow GUI:

I think with DVDSlideShow GUI you will have to re-create all the transitions. I think screen capture will be easiest.
