I am converting from an AVI d/l from the net. I want to burn onto 2 CD's so space is not an issue. What settings for a VCD do I adjust to get rid of the blocks..Everyone talks about DVD quality...how do I get it with a good source file. Thanks

lol, technically, you can never get dvd quality from an avi off the net fully but definitely better quality than vhs with no blocks.
For 2 cds, here are a few tricks.
U?se high quality in motion search precision, if vid is over 1 hr 45 min, use highest to get rid of blocks at fast motion scenes.
Use 2 pass wisely, IM me on aim- shizzzon to get exact bitrates for max file size before overburn(these have been calculated, estimate of no more than 6 mb difference on all dvd movies).
Motion search precision takes care of blocks just bout all the time.
Remember this- when u use 2 pass, make sure u have a pc running more than 1 ghz if time is an issue of encoding, the method i use increases bitrate to 450 more than cbr so outstanding quality always shown, nice clean cut movie on tv.ShiZZZoN PzN

Well, follow what sean said, but iof it doesn't work, then you're gonna have to try a couple of filters like Noise Reduction, Sharpness, and so on. If the avi is not made from a DVD, then don't expect too much out of it. DivX is only good when used with sources such as SVCD or DVD, if they're made from a VCD, it's just a waste of time
Otherwise, you should get some decent quality

Well thanks for the advice...glad you like the name also. I have been using 2pass but not the HQ so I will do that and see if it makes a difference. I have always been suspicious of those who talk about downloading movie files and getting "dvd quality" , I mean does it really seem logical to take a 5GB dvd and make a 700mb avi out of it and then make a mpg out of that and end up with something of equal quality as the original DVD?
Here are my settings if anyone can see something that will help remove the blocks
2-pass VBR bitrate 1150 ave
1950 max
motion search high quality
Advanced simple color correction
noise reduction
clip frame

lol, when i first started dl avi dvd rips and encodin em, i thought mine was pure dvd quality until i got me a dvd rom and watching the vobs on my pc.
Boy, was i wrong!
Comparing the original vob to encoded svcd mpg on the pc, vob is by far, way more crisp than the mpg, and if u encode to vcd, it gets even farther from looking like vob.
I do know that it exceeds vhs quality.
And since cds keep their quality WAY longer than vhs tapes, thats the goal.
We always for some reason say, if its better than vhs, its dvd, lol. I dont know, not dvd, but just better than vhsShiZZZoN PzN

I usually get blocks in the background like wall's or bleu sky's etc. They appear in places wich have the same color in gradience. How do i get rid of those artifacts? Space is not an issue. Is usually use 3 or 4 cd's for a movie. If somebody can help....

if its in the far background, u must keep this in mind also-
dvd has a res of 720x480
svcd has a res of 480x480
vcd has a res of 352x240
The higher the res, the more crisp a video can get.
VCD for example has half the res of a dvd so its crispness for things farther back in the background will cause things like that to show up the way they do.
Now svcd is the closest standard res u can get to dvd and it does a pretty good job but it is not 100% comparable to dvd's crispness.
I have problems like that too. Its not really bad quality blocks, its just things are very small like patterns on a carpet or small things in the background, 480x480 isnt enough to fulfill that kind of things especially for 1 cd or sometimes even 2ShiZZZoN PzN
