Hi,
I'm looking to find what Players besides the LG BD390 will support the playback of DivX and MKV files from the shared folder off a PC. I've been looking for 2 days now and not finding much besides the BD390 or going a cheaper route of buying 2 devices, a Blueray player and an ASUS O!PLAY HD Network Media Player separately?
Thanks for any input![]()

The idea of having only 1 device for playback sounds great in theory, but in reality it usually leads to disappointment. DVD/BluRay players tend to be extremely fussy about what they will play, which leads to consumer anger as their BluRay or DVD player won't play their files. Streaming media players tend to be much more able to play a wide variety of files.
One bit of warning - some media players don't support BluRay type audio like Dolby Lossless or DTS-HD very well or maybe not at all. At this time it's probably best to not have a lot of files that use those. -
I just got a Samsung bd-5500c yesterday, which should play mkv files on a home network computer, using samsung's PC share software. I haven't tested it yet, but will over the weekend.

I've got the LG BD570. This DVD has DLNA, but that is not something I'm interested in because I don't want to run some Media Server on my PC. I simply want to play PC shared files. Besides the DLNA, the BD570 can access PC shared files, but...... it only plays .avi files. Not: vob, mkv, wmv, divx etc etc...... So, quite bad. The worst thing is that when I originally bought this DVD player, it DID play vob files, but after a firmware update, this was not possible anymore, it was disabled. Nice move LG !
Out of pure dispair, I bought the Philips BDP5180. This DVD player also has DLNA. My hope of it being able to access PC shared files was in vain. Only DLNA, no ability to access my network.
I'm gonna buy a second Asus O!play. -
My friend bought a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Don't know the model number but as far as I know, it will play all of his files on his computer. I'll get a hold of him and find out for sure and get the model number. I believe he paid around $200 for it.
He has his laptop connected to the Blu-Ray and the laptop is connected to the network via a Netgear Wireless-N/10/100/1000 router. -
OK, so maybe the Panasonic DVD player can play most formats ?. I'm surely interested in this model then.
Still I belief that DVD player will never be as good as a media player such as for example the Asus O!Play.
There are simply to many formats. For example, .iso files.... I don't think DVD players will ever support .iso or .rar files. But the O!Play does. I think that 25% of all the movies which I download nowadays are in .iso format.
I did get DLNA to work on both DVD players. TVMobili wasn't able to play a lot a formats. Mezzmo did a better job. Mezzmo was able to play all formats (ofcourse not .iso). The LG DVD player wasn't able to FF though, the Philips was able to do this. So, the LG was quite useless not being able to FastForward. I needed to open up some ports on the firewall of my PC in order to get these 2 Media Servers to be able to get connected to the 2 DVD players.

My samsung c5500 plays large mkv files off my home computer or a 16gb flash drive (if formatted in ntfs format).
Be careful, sony bd players won't read flash drives formatted with ntfs format, only fat32 which won't support mkv files over 4gb.W.J.Meyer, JVC 30K, Sam.T165, Pioneer 6010fd, Samsung c5500, Denon AVR-1910,
