Which would be recommended rip format to just place a few movies per dvd?
mp4 or xvid?
wanting maybe 4 or so movies per 25G disc....

That depends - what are you planning to use to play the videos? A computer? A standalone DVD/BD player? Media player, like the WDTV, Popcorn Hour, etc.? If you're going to use a standalone (non-computer) device, you're probably limited to whatever formats the device will recognize - and many of the DVD/BD players tend to be rather strict on how the videos they do recognize are encoded.
If you're hoping to create a DVD-Video disc, on the other hand (one that should be compatible with more players), it's generally not recommended to go over 2-3 hours of video. (I'm not saying you can't go over three hours - but the quality of the video will definitely decrease. Whether or not the resulting quality is acceptable is up to you.)
