  1. can ps3 copy a 1:1 commerical blu-ray movie backup from the disc without quality loss to its internal hard disk, then play the movie from its hd without the disc? if not, can l copy a commerical 1:1 blu-ray movie backup without quality loss to an external hd using a netbook with an external blu ray drive, then copy the backup from the external hd to ps3 internal hd and play it from there? or just directly play it from the external hd by connecting it to ps3 via usb?

No. You must copy using a computer.

Actually if you had one of the previous firmwares for ps3 that allowed linux I BELIEVE you were able to hook up the ps3 to a pc and copy it that way. I think it was called yellow dog linux or some such.

However the current firmware for ps3 has diabled that other os feature and is not available. I don't know how to rollback the firmware on a ps3 but if you could and could go far enough back to reenable the other os feature you can get install the version of linux made for the ps3 (but you could never update it again as that would wipe out the linux installation).

So yes you could but there is a lot of work involved and I don't know if its supported anymore. I don't know if you were able to simply rip it to the internal harddrive or if you had transfer to a computer. Also I don't know if it has been updated to support newer forms of copy protection on bluray movies.

A far far simpler approach assuming you have a bd-rom drive on your computer is to use dvdfabdecrypter or anydvdhd. I am not sure about bluray ripping on free dvdfabdecrypter - the free dvdfab lets you rip but doesn't have the absolute latest protection protocols. The pay version does as does anydvdhd which is payware only. Then you can rip straight to your computer without any hassles.

Edit - two things more - I don't know if any netbook has enough power to play bluray movies - they are often underpowered - that may have changed but I don't believe they are.

Also the ps3 can only read fat32 harddrives through usb so you can't read any single file over 4gbs so that precludes bluray files. Also it can't read them unconverted even if you transfered them to the internal harddrive somehow to my knowledge.

You should use a computer bdrom and a commercial ripper. Than you can convert to avchd and burn to a dvdr or get a bluray burner and make a 1:1 copy that way and be done with it.

  4. so l cant use ps3 to watch any 1:1 backup copy, but l can watch it from my other laptop's hard disk right, assuming it is powerful enough to play blu-ray movie, right? like if l use anydvd hd to copy a 1:1 commerical blu-ray movie backup from the disc without quality loss to my pc's hard disk, then l remove the blu-ray disc from the drive and use anydvd hd to play that 1:1 copy from the pc hard disk, this way can work right?

Yes do a straight rip to your computer harddrive and play it back that way.

If you want to use your ps3 you have to do one of a couple of things:

Stream the ripped disc with your computer to the ps3 (using playon, ps3mediaserver, or tversity) via a lan connection - wifi is messy for hd and would difficult for buffering issues if its not a line of sight connection.

Convert your bluray to avchd on dvdr and play that way (quality loss but still very good if you drop to 720p and use dual layer discs).

But your options are limited for 1:1 quality.

You could also invest in a wdtv media player or one of its competitors. You still rip with the computer but you can play off a ntfs harddrive with the wdtv media player without converting.

Edit - I believe I also mentioned for 1:1 get a bluray burner and burn to a dual layer bdr and you are all set.

  6. any real difference between ripping a 1:1 copy to hard disk and burning a 1:1 copy to a dual layer bdr?

    I can't answer that as I don't have a bluray burner.

But theoretically it is the same as doing a dual layer dvd rip and burning to a dual layer dvdr. Everything is kept intact.
