How do you convert Avis to divx, so you can convert to VCD?

How do you convert Avis to divx? I want to try to convert some avi files that i have to VCD, but it seems to me that I can not convert directly from AVI to VCD. If someone could please help me out cause i am very frustrated. I have looked on the web site "how to conver divx/avi using virtualdub" but it doesnt seem to work converting to a divx file? Also can you convert AVI directly to VCD? Thank you for your help.

You should be able to convert from AVI to MPEG1 (VCD) no problem. Converting to DivX first will only lower the video quaility.

We nee more information:

1) What's the format of the source? You said AVI but are you sure? Can you play it in media player? What codec does it use?

2) How have you tried to encode it? You said you couldn't but need more info. TMPGenc will load/open avi files.

Your AVI will convert directly to VCD MPEG format - however, it it is larger than 4Gb, you will likely have problems, for ewxample you might lose the audio part way thru. By compressing the AVI into a smaller AVI, and bringing the size less than 4Gb, your conversion to MPEG should be OK.
You need to install a DIVX codec before you can compress to DIVX. you can choose a variety of codecs, but DIVX is good. Use Virtualdub to do the conversion, (use full processing mode and choose the codec) so you end up with a smaller AVI. After that, play it to make sure the audio is still there, and still in sync.
Then use an encoder (TMPGEnc is popular) to convert the AVI (<4Gb) to MPEG. TMPGenc has a number of wizard templates, including those for VCD PAL and NTSC. Note that a VCD will hold a little over an hour of material, so if it is a 2 hour movie, split it with Virtualdub first. With the TMPGENC wizard, drop out of the wizard before you encode, click Settings, and selelect a high quality encode.
If you use Nero, you could also have Nero do the encoding for you. It will take in the AVI directly, (no need for DIVX) and do the MPEG encoding before it burns the VCD. Quality will not be as good as with TMPGENC.
