i have recorded some videos from television in the format mpeg2full D1 with 128 kbps dolby digital sound. in the video there is news strip moving underneath. i want to clean the video by removing the newsstrip by croping the bottom of the video. actually i don't know any other method to do this. kindly suggest the way to do this.

If you crop it you'll also have to resize it. Masking it allows you to keep the original resolution without resizing. I use AviSynth's Letterbox filter for such things:
Letterbox(0,20)
covers the bottom 20 rows of pixels with black:

I was wondering about this also. Is there any way to actually remove the graphics on a video? For instance, I have a clip of an old Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. When they start their story there is a graphic that says "Brazil Jungle" or something in white lettering in the center of the screen. Is there anyway to remove this?

Just something to keep in mind -- since you've captured MPEG2, you're going to end up re-encoding your footage if you crop/mask it, resulting in a slightly softer picture. Use a good encoder.
