  1. Just in case anyone is thinking about getting involved in video capture, I just want to say look to an "Intel inside" box. No, I don't work for Intel. But recently I caught the capture bug... or maybe I was captured by the capture bug. I had a 500mhz AMD K6 2-500 system laying around that I attempted to use. I never got it to capture from an ATI Rage Fury Pro 128 card. I got it to capture from a BT8x8 card, but there were intermittent lockups. Using a Dazzle DVC Parallel Port version I could not capture at greater than 1.9mbits/sec.

I just purchased and installed a Pentium II motherboard with Pentium II 500 mhz. I can now capture with my Rage Fury Pro 128. So far my BT8x8 chip capture has had no intermittent lockups. And I can capture from my Dazzle DVC Parallel Port device at its full capacity.

This is just my experience of course, but considering how much I had to fiddle around with the AMD and never got it to actually work right and all I did was installe the software on the Intel machine and I was "off to the races" I thought I might spare someone some futile effort.

  2. infact you are true. The AMD K6 models sucks. The format is too old. But with the new K7 Athlon is blows the crap out of the PIII non coppermine verison by %10 in every benchmark. That changed with the coppermine verison, which tided with K7 thunderbird. With the new 266 DDR bus it can beat the P4. Motherboard support is fine. The new motherboard are a lot better then before. So most of the problem are gone except for the SB LIve! issue and some other issues.

The problem with AMD and capture cards is the incompatibility with the VIA chipset. Both Dazzle and Pinacle have problems with these chipsets, as do certain add on cards. The VIA chipset is known to cause problems with CD burning and large file transfers.

These problems are appearent in systems that use both AMD and Intel CPU's with VIA chipsets.

    It isn't AMD's fault, it's VIA's fault.

I own a AMD Duron850/VIA combo. I recently picked up an Intel866/Intel combo. After being able to use both systems with the same hardware, I can honestly say I will never own another AMD product again.
