Just out of curiousity.. are commercially made vcd's better quality than homeade (with tmpg high quality for example) .. in other words, is the blockiness in high motion or detailed scenes visible? Also, are they 2 cd's as well?

  2. Yes, commercial are better than most, but you can get close with a fast computer, patience, and the right software. But making your own is way more psychologically rewarding. Also, since VCD is constant bitrate, it should take the same number of disks in theory.

  3. I think it depends on where you get them, I’ve seen some very bad VCD, especially from Asia markets, and all the one’s I’ve seen and purchased are at least two CD’s. The case they come in are generally very good and the Labels on the Cd is of good quality.

  4. I would say that if the person knows what they are doing and they have a good source then home made VCD's are better than commercial. This doesnt hold true for some commercial vcds however.

  5. In practice, most home made VCDs (DVD rips) tend to look better. This is most due to the source.

In theory (and occasionally in practice), a commercial VCD can look better as the people who make them have access to very expensive hardware encoders.
