Mkv is a just another container like avi. It has different capabilities than some containers. I'm not sure what the differences are exactly but it is different than mp4 or avi. But it is still just a container.

    the usual suspects:

    format factory
    super
    xvid4psp
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Use gspot or mediainfo to identify the video inside.

If your player (do you mean dvd player?) supports the codec and the resolution its in then you can simply remux the video without reencoding.

You could try winff or avidemux for that.

edit - if its a high def mkv you almost certainly won't be able to play it as high def on a standard definition dvd player. That would need to be fully reencoded to a format it can read in standard defintion resolution.

They can be useful containers as MKV files can also carry multiple subtitle tracks and audio tracks.
