I'm hoping someone can recommend an easy to use converter that actually does what I want it to do. I would like to be able to convert DVDs, mostly TV shows, to a format that I can stream from my PC to my two LCD TVs. I first tried DVDFab DVD Ripper, but it has a bug with deinterlace only working if you rewrite the profile and force it on. Unfortunately the result is a very low quality conversion, though it is deinterlaced. I have also tried many of the Chinese converters with no luck either, except for WinX DVD Ripper. But I have to exit out and restart after every single conversion to avoid a little rainbow streak at the bottom of the video, and that slows down the process. I also tried Handbrake, but again deinterlace seemed to have no effect, probably because I don't know much about the settings. I've looked at AviSynth and Avanti, but those look pretty overwhelming with all of the possible options you can use to convert. I am kind of leaning toward HDConvertToX, which seems a little more simple than AviSynth and Avanti, yet equally as good. If it helps, the process I plan to use is rip the DVD to my HD first with DVDFab DVD Ripper and work with VOB files. From there convert to a streamable format with minimal quality loss due to deinterlacing. Can anyone make any recommendations? Thanks.

You should be able to simply stream an iso or a single vob from the dvd. What are you using to watch the stream? Are the tvs networked themselves or are you using a bluray player/game console/media player device?
I'd try using ps3mediaserver, playon or tversity to simply stream a ripped iso or single vob file directly to your playback unit. See if that works. Than you wouldn't need to convert at all.
Of course it would take up more space if you don't do any conversion - or simply use dvdshrink to shrink dual to single layer than you'd have a bunch of 4gb movies to store.
If you want to convert to something like divx or h264 try any of the following programs:
super
xvid4psp
format factory
That should be a good start.
(the streaming programs above won't need conversion - simply point them to your movie folder and they will transcode it on the fly so your playback device will be able to play it)Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Yeah, I do want to convert them to save space. I use Samsung PC Share Manager to stream the videos to my Samsung TV in the bedroom and an LG DVD player downstairs, hooked up to an LG TV. I will try the programs you mentioned, thanks. About AviSynth, Avanti, and HDConvertToX, are the learning curves for using them easy to overcome? I feel I'm a relatively smart person, but on the surface, those programs look intimidating to understand all of the intricacies.

I'm about to give up, lol. I cannot seem to get any program to deinterlace at all. I'm trying to convert a DVD rip of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, and Survivor into single episode files. I used DVD Fab to make the rips. I uninstalled all of my old codecs, then installed K-lite 64 bit, set everything to ffdshow. Using Handbrake I set detelecine and decomb to default, both have no effect on the output. I tried changing some of the settings in the advanced options, no effect. I also tried XMediaRecode as well, no effect on the output. Whenever a person talks there are horizontal lines over their mouths. Is deinterlacing really that much of a crapshoot, finding the right setting to have the right effect? Or am I just missing something? Could I have made bad DVD rips? I read the documentation for Handbrake on decombing but, to me, it's really worthless as it doesn't really explain what effect changing a particular setting has on the output, i.e., if you change this setting this way, it will have this effect on your output.
Here is an example of what every attempt I make results in:
Can anyone offer me some help/advice as to how to fix this deinterlace problem?
Thanks. -
Lovely. Must be nice to burn a grand on compressor.
ConvertXtoDVD has a built in setting for deinterlacing and to be honest, it's the only one I've found works well.
I read on a forum (somewhere, can't remember) that Windows Movie Maker renders them better too. Try that.
I've not had and probs of late so hav'nt had to struggle with the problem for a couple of years. -
I have been playing around with Freemake Video Converter https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Freemake_Video_Converter it flies through video on a i7 CPU, Win7 and Nvidia GTS250 with Cuda. I just used it last night for video that my media player choked on and that some other tools I use wouldn't process. it was a lot slower here at work on a P4 3.2Ghz non Cuda to stitch two flv's into one avi, however it ran and did its thing. I encoded 7 videos in batch mode last night in one run.
I'll keep it installed since the output was OK and fast and it was easy to input the 7 files to be encoded.Last edited by TBoneit; 28th Feb 2011 at 10:54. Reason: grammar (Clarity)
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself. -
I messed around with HDConvertToX, but as far as I know, it only accepts a single file. Working with DVD rips, there are multiple vob files. That's why I like Handbrake, because it will allows me to select the individual episodes separately from the DVD rip.

As for TV shows, recorded as 60i - and to deinterlace them to 30p will give you not satisfying result, better or worse. You have to bob deinterlace to 60p. Nowadays there is no reason to avoid it anymore. 60p is not a bad word anymore.
Try somenting like QTGMC http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156028 ,which I think is based on old TempGaussMC scripts. It is going to be slow but you get very good results.
DVD's might be 24p just inside 60i "wrapper" , be carefull, I do not rip DVD's so cannot offer how those free software around deal with it exactly.
Just pointing out that you can get 24p result or 60p , it depends.
