I'm reading a book on professional editing and started the chapter on sound. The more I play around with video and editing and put sound and music to it
I'm starting to think music and sound is much more important than the actual video footage.

For those of you that edit your own video and put music to your work, where do you find the music? Do you buy the music and then add it to your footage? Is there some online site that offers free generic soundtracks?

I'm shooting video of scenery and such and find it kind of boring. I want to add music once I start transferring it to my PC. But where do I find the music? I have CD's and
downloaded music from iTunes and such. Are there any other sources for music? Are there any online catalogs that offer free sounds that invoke feelings of being scary, happy, sunny, cold, love, hate, anger, etc....?

    tons of music available online
you can search for buy-out music which you can enjoy unlimited use
there's royalty-free music with some restrictions
there's recording an artist or band live and using their music with compensation/permission
there's making your own but it may take 20 years of learning to play instruments

part of the prob I've noticed is that a lot of this music is faked using a midi keyboard and software. unusual orchestral instruments like oboe, clairnet, flute may have a plastic synth sound to them. the makers rarely use the sustain pedal because they are unaware of the effect and it didn't come with their keyboard. this leads to unnatural sound IMO...especially the piano, a major instrument

the usual method is matching music to a scene
imagine doing the opposite...shooting a scene to match the music

I don't have my editing software yet, Sony Vegas Suite 10, but lets say I want to add an iTunes song I bought to my video. I assume that it will be protected and will not allow me to use it. Is there a way around this so I can add it to my edited video? This all would be for private use only and not to sale for profit.

The more I think about it, the more I think sound and music make movies and films. Sitcoms not so much, one hour dramas a little, but theatrical movies, a bunch.

So along with being the cinematographer and editor (want I want to be) I also have to be the person in charge of finding the sounds and music!

TV is dialogue driven. when was the last time you watched it when there was 10 seconds of silence? the TV industry considers this "dead air".

although you're not supposed to use anyone else's music even for private use, it seems most ignore this rule and add their favorite music to their homemade videos. the thinking is, who's going to know?

Zoobie explained it well in post #4. Just enter "royalty free buyout music" in your search bar and go at it. If you ever plan to post video clips on YouTube, you won't be able to incorporate copyrighted music. If you plan to share your work with others, you will need to legally secure the music you use in your production.

If you can afford it--give work to a talented composer/musician who may need some extra income.
