Do you want to create a DVD Video disc playable on (almost) any DVD player ? If so, AVStoDVD or DVD Flick. Both will create a DVD Video disc structure with soft subs that can be turned on or off with the remote.
If you have a DVD player capable of playing avi files (many can if they are correctly encoded) then just make sure both the movie and subtitle files have the same name (e.g. movie1.avi movie1.srt) and burn as data.
In both cases the best burning tool is Imgburn.Read my blog here.
