VC-1 to h264

hi,

I have bunch of videos in VC-1 and in order to play them on my PS3 and some other devices I want to convert to h264. I tried converting without re-encoding but it did not work. Now I am trying to just re-encode using xvid4psp. I am having a problem though. I would like to get the h264 video in the same or very close to the same quality, I do not care that much for saving disk space. The files can be of the same or a little bigger size. My problem is that when I look at the output from mediainfo I do not see any encoding settings just like for h264 so I do not know how to setup the xvid4psp to preserve original quality. Does anybody know about easy way of doing it ?

What settings have you tried?

You can load the mp4 ps3 preset. Under video encoding can you adjust quality bitrate settings. Click on the configure button and lower the constant quality for better quality but bigger file size. You can try around 15-20 for very good quality. Or set an exact bitrate or output file size with 1-pass bitrate or 2-pass size.

Under video->resolution adjust the width and height to 1920x1080.

You can use the set start and set stop to test convert a sample to see how it looks like and if it works on your ps3.

If you want to be able to play the mp4 on most devices you should reduce the resolution to max around 720x480.

You won't preserve the original quality exactly since you are reencoding. Thats the nature of reencoding.

Use something like ripbot264 and use constant quality to get a good output. I am pretty sure the lower the number the better the quality will be and the larger the file size will be (i might have that backwards though). cq 20 is a good place to start for balancing quality and file size.

I was actually using one of the presets cq-22-insane-animation for mp4 which took about 3 hrs per file on my 3.2 ghz CPU. I am trying now with this setting but lowered the cq to 18 to see if I will be able to see any difference in quality.

I used the g15 which increased the encoding time by 1:30 min - the quality is great thanks for suggestions. I have a question though - I am using one of the presets the q22 insane animation (MP4) from the drop down menu, I just changed the q22 to q15 but have not changed any other setting - should I change anything else while changing the "quality" feature ? or it doe snot matter ?

Maybe I should restate my question to what settings I should pay attention to while increasing the quality of a video in general ?
