  1. Just starting capturing PS3 footage via a Hauppage HD PVR. When I transfer the M2TS files to MPEG-2, the alarm on my motherboard goes off.

I've tried a stress testing program and it seems it goes off at 80 degrees. I'm not particularly techincally minded so not sure whether my PC is up for the job.

Is there anything you feel I should upgrade in my PC to prevent this problem, or improve the effieciency of encoding and uploading HD footage?

Wasn't sure whether a decent CPU cooler would do the job?

I use Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 for editing and uploading to the likes of YouTube and EmicSoft M2TS Converter for converting M2TS files to MPEG-2.

Here's my specs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Windows XP
    3G RAM
    3 x HDD - 1x 130GB, 1x 30GB, 1x120GB
    CPU Type DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2, 2700 MHz (13.5 x 200) 5200+
    Motherboard Name Abit AN52V (3 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN)
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (1024 MB)

Bigger/better cooling fan(s). Or check so all fans are running smoothly. Clean them from dust.

  3. Yep, will be spring-cleaning! Where do you start with cooling fans, it's a minefield of different types?

I would go with what Baldrick says. Check the fans and make sure everything is clean. 80C will do some damage to the CPU if continued. Check case airflow also and make sure you have enough air moving through there. Those series AMDs don't generally run hot, so just a through cleaning and maybe replacing the CPU thermal compound may be enough.

I'm going to guess that's a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 Brisbane 2.7GHz. If so, it's a 65W CPU and shouldn't be overheating, even with a stock CPU cooler and not overclocked. I do have a 5200+ in one of my PCs and it's never ran very warm and uses the stock cooler.

For CPU cooler upgrades, depends on your PC case and how much room you have. Some of the air CPU coolers are huge and may not fit into smaller cases. It also depends on what you have presently. If it's a tiny cooler, then about anything will be an upgrade. Also the cost of some CPU coolers is a factor.

Generally, higher performance coolers and fans are going to be nosier, so take that into account. One CPU cooler you might look at that seems to be compatible with your PC is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186035 You may need to check locally to see if they are available there.

  5. Sling those POS old disk into the bin, they are def a bottleneck. Get even a single modern 1tb and it will outperform those disks easily. Get 2x1tb and you will live in Nirvana (1 for OS+Apps, 1 for captured footage). Sounds like your CPU fan is either inadequate or has become unstuck. Either get a new one or reseat your existing fan after cleaning off the old goo and putting new goo on it.
    Goo = thermal paste.

Incidentally there is no such thing as a 130gb disk ??

55-68 C is max rated ... either solve the heat issue by using silver 5 heatsink compound or get a much better cpu cooler.

  8. Appreciate the advice all. Have cleaned out and it was really dusty. I have a very small case due to small area where I have to keep it. Someone has recommended the Corsair All In One Water Cooler, so may well try that.

That's probably overkill for your PC unless you are overclocking, but take a look at this thread about the Corsair H50: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/270162-AMD-six-core-CPU-and-Corsair-H50-water-cooling-setup?
