I am burning television shows to Blu-ray using the following method.

I use a Tivo RS-TX20 to record and then burn the episodes straight to DVD (the Tivo has a DVD Burner built in).

I then use DVD Decrypter to burn the VOB files to my hd

I use Sony Vegas to edit out the commercials, and render out as MainConcept Mpeg-2 720x480

I then put all episodes that I want to put on a Blu-ray disc into DVD Architect, creating a couple of simple menus with each epidsode name (about 18 22 minute episodes)

I then create the Blu-ray using Blu-ray format, 25GB disc size, Mpeg-2 video format, 12 bit rate, 720x480 res, AC-3 Stereo at 448

I have burned them to Ridata BD-r using an LG burner

I watched some episodes with no problems on a Sony BDP-s360 with updated firmware, but then they started to pixelate and freeze. I thought the sony was messed up, but then they did the same on a Philips unit. I then thought that I would copy a disc to a Memorex disc, but then the player/burner that I used to Burn it originally said that there were too many errors.

Is it likely just the media, or is it possible that one of the other steps is responsible? I don't really have any other media to play with at the moment.

    Thanks for any help

Too many steps, too many tools, and Ridata makes CRAP DVDs so I'd imagine their BD media is just as bad.

Step 1 - just how many 18-22 minute episodes recorded on one dvd disk ?
Step 3 - Vegas re-encodes the edits which means a loss in quality
Step 4/5 - Is that pure blu-ray or simply dvd quality mpeg2 files ?
Step 6 - I bow to hech54's knowledge about blank media.

Step back. Is all this, beyond step 1, really neccessary ?

DB83: I have 18 total episodes that are 22 minutes each per Blu-ray disc. The quality is actually good, but my problem is the strange pixelization and then freezing. It is as if the discs are going bad in just a short amount of time. They are dvd quality mpeg2 files burned to blu-ray for space considerations (lots of episodes per disc).

hech54: As far as too many steps and tools, I am using one for ripping, one for editing, and one to burn them all to blu-ray. Why would that inherently be bad? What would you recommend for Blu-ray media, as I would guess that is my most likely problem?

guns1inger: I have Sony Vegas Pro 10, which is what I am used too. Why would your suggestions be a better choice?

Thank you guys for the help

guns1inger suggested these because they only re encode the joins where the adverts were cut, keeping the original files quality and also making your job much quicker.Niether program is particularly hard to use and both work extremly well.

I'd recommend Verbatim, but NOT their LTH line of BD discs.

  8. Describe your playback process in more detail. You burn a disk, and at first it plays OK, then playback goes bad.

Has this happened on more than one disk?

Are you playing file(s) 1-2-3, or randomly seeking the disk?

Do the same files which at first played OK now show problems?

Have you attempted playback on the PC, either at first or after issues appear?

Describe at each question whether it has happened more than once.

A simple editor will not lessen quality in the same way that a re-encode or "render" process will. This should not be the cause of the problem as you have described it, however the possibility does exist and it is an unnecessary step which takes more time and lowers the quality of the video.

The discs do seem to go bad as I play them. I have watched an episode, and as I watch it the pixelation will start and then the freezing. Then when I go back to play it again, it us unplayable.

I started out with 52 episodes spread out over 3 discs. All three discs are practically unplayable.

I have each episode on the disc as a seperate file. I will pick an episode at will, and play that, so not in any order.

Shows that originally would play no longer play.

I don't have software to play the discs on my compter, but the disc would not do direct copy in Nero because it said that it was corrupt or something like that. I do know that the original mpeg2 files will play.

Again, I am thinking bad media, but I wanted opinions before I go out and purchase more. Maybe I got a bad batch? I had used the Ridata before for making home movie discs.

Thanks to all for the help and explaining the need for the other software. I already have the 52 episodes edited, so I am praying that I will not need to re-rip and edit those. I will look into those programs for future needs however.
