I am going to convert a collection of DVDs to mkv (h.264). I have enough space to hold 100+ dvd iso's, so I don't care how large the files are. I am only converting for convenience of having the entire collection just a few clicks away. I would like the converted videos to be full dvd quality. What bitrate would you recommend considering the aforementioned prequisites? I would like to keep as much of the quality as possible without going completely overboard.

why don't you just run Bitrate Viewer and see what the max bitrate of the dvd is and use that?

Are all of your DVD discs progressive movies? You would use much more bit rate for camcorder files or other interlace source.

If quality is a must, use similar average bit rates to DVD (4-5 Mb/s for VBR). Remember VBR DVD MPeg2 uses up to 9Mb/s for action scenes. If you cheap out on bit rate action scenes will dissolve into artifacts.

What is wrong with the iso? Why mess with it if compression isn't needed?

PS: Moontrash made my point with 20% the rant.
