I have a DVD that I got a while back and I wanted to rip it to my computer. The issue is that some of the tracks have black 'keyframes' (not sure sure what to call them), that appear every so often. Originally you needed a key code to remove them, but I no longer have the key and the company I got the disk from no longer exists. Does anyone know how I would go about removing them?

I suspect that we are dealing with two overlaid video streams, with one of them being the black 'keyframes' that are appearing from time to time, but I am not aware of any software I can use to confirm this or remove it. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW I am using a Mac, but have access to Windows. In worst case I have a friend with Linux.

That is very curious, and I'm a bit skeptical whether the file structure on the disc makes it truly DVD-compliant. Tell us more about its origins. Have you tried ripping it to hard drive using a tool like DVDFab? (Of course, that will only work on a Windows PC.) Can you see a file structure from the DVD drive in your computer? Look for VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders (the latter of which will be empty).

The DVD has the proper structure, since it can be played by a regular DVD player. I am able to play the DVD using VLC either by reading it as a DVD or opening the individual VOB files. The problem is the blanking that would normally have been removed using a 4 digit code on a specific screen of the DVD. I have pondered whether the method uses a separate track or a a different keyframe that is ignored when the right code is provided. The audio plays continuously even when these black sequences appear.

The bbdmux tool (from bbtools), tells me the following on the decrypted VOB:

    Code:
Scanning for stream id's, press control-c to quit ...

File /Users/targen/VTS_44_1.VOB is an MPEG-2 Program Stream

Found stream id 0xBF = Private Stream 2
Found stream id 0xE0 = Video Stream 0
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1
Found stream id 0xBE = Padding Stream

    Summary:

    MPEG Packs = 203002
    System headers = 3732
    Private Stream 1 packets = 21324, total bytes = 43073328
    Padding Stream packets = 3721, total bytes = 5136745
    Private Stream 2 packets = 7464, total bytes = 7456536
    Video stream 0 packets = 177946, total bytes = 355145295
BTW Fairmount is a useful tool on the Mac to mount the DVD decrypted.
