  1. I can click on the hard drive, open a folder, open a project, but it then tells me the device is not connected, files are not available, etc.

I then try and copy these files to my C drive which is fine and it won't copy - device not connected. I can see the files.

    Any ideas?

Edit: I also get the device not connected message when trying to open some folders on this drive.

You can go to the mfg's website and download a program to check the integrity of your HDD

  3. Describe the type of hard drive and how it is connected to the PC. If this is in an external enclosure, that's most likely the problem.

  4. It's internal.

You're probably only seeing cached data.

Try uninstalling the disk via the control panel/system/hardware, then rebooting and maybe everything will be okay. Maybe you have a cabling problem, or a controler problem, or some other hardware issue.

Usually, a Seagate drive should be able to tell you its "health" via SMART.

If not, well you still have that recent backup that you made - don't you?

  7. Thanks, that didn't do anyrthing. Yes, this was all backed up. That Seagate program doesn't even work on my C drive which is a Seagate. I keep getting back 'Test Unavailable'. A moment ago I was able to open a file/folder I couldn't. Now the whole drive isn't showing up.

I'll get a new cable, HD and report back. Thank you.

You might have specific spots on the disk that are unreadable .... once it hits that spot.. the OS usually takes
the drive out of service... hence the error you are receiving 'device is not connected'..

Time for a new hard disk

  9. That's what I figured. A 1TB Seagate that didn't last six months - wow.

  11. Could be the cable, try another one or try it on another computer.

  12. I know, but you expect a liitle more than 6 months out of the thing. Talk about luck, I had JUST finished transferring my video masters from the drive. I got this in one take and would have cried if I had lost it. Thanks, all...

  14. Don't forget to try a different power connector, also mobo port as well.

    Should still be under Warranty.

If it turns out to be the HDD, get the next with a 3-4 year warranty usually for an additional $5
As mentioned, they are cheap in price and, unfortunately, quality
