I bought a 73 inch Mitsubishi TV. It finally arrived today. I haven't opened it yet. But the box only measures 67 inches across. And it even says 73 inches on the box. Printed clear as day in big numbers. So I got the right TV.
Is this normal? Do companies usually lie about size? Wouldn't that be illegal. I don't get it.

you can't get an accurate measurement until you remove the shrink wrap.

That's plain stupid. You have to average the two to get an accurate result. Parallelogram distortion is a big problem with larger screens.
-
aren't you supposed to also account for the sine wave deflection of current float screen production?
-
No no no!!!!
You measure from top to bottom, then side to side, add the two, take that total then divide by 3.14159265

Much like the foam animals you can get at the zoo, simply put it in the bathtub, add water and wait 30 minutes.
It'll get bigger.
Just don't plug it in yet.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

no... they use metric inches in Japan , which are smaller than imperial inches. But the boxes and packaging are made in the USA which use imperial

I believe it's like a bag of potato chips. They reason it's not a completely full 73 inches is because "contents may have settled during shipping". So take the TV out of the box and pour it into a bowl. Now weigh the TV and bowl, subtract the weight of the bowl from the total weight. It should weigh 73 inches. Wait a minute....

You know, since dafoe has been a member since '02 (with over 400 posts, not going for any records, but enough...) I kinda hope he was playing around. But, I really think he didn't know. I'm sure he's having a
moment right now. And then maybe a
.
Let's do him a favor an have a good ol fashioned thread jack....
I had my own WTF/OOPS moment as a sophomore in high school. History teacher was discussing some advanturer who crossed the Atlantic and then the Pacific. He asked how they could know the difference between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Me, not being shy in the classroom, raised my hand. The only one in the room. So, he had no choice but to chose me. My answer: Because the Pacific is fresh water. Brought a grin to my teacher's face a roar from the classroom. Then everyone figured out I actually believed seeing how red my face was.
Yup, I didn't know the Pacific was good old salty sea water until I was 16 years old.
Naaaaaaahhhhhhh, thinking and actually asking why the box was only 67 inches is worse.... nevermind.Have a good one,

Yeah i was kind of thinking the same thing.....
Like, how could you be a member here for 8 years, even live in the world for 8 years and not know TV's, regardless of size or type, and not know all TV's have always been measured Diagonally ?
Even back in the old days with 4:3 CRT/Tube TV's, they have always been measured Diagonally....
I think this is a good idea for a new poll....
Who's reply is the best.....
And i vote for M Bruner, on a funny level.... -

my guess would be that a woman designed the box.
And she was used to being told that things were 6" bigger than they actually are.
-
Is it possible your looking at the box backwards, it's actually 37" inches?
Quantum physics may be playing a role here too, since things don't actually touch anything, it's possible that the TV really is 73" inches and that the buildup of electrons between the box and the TV are too high causing a small black hole at the rim of the vortex to the box, thereby warping the actual size of the TV in space and making the box appear way too small? In theory, opening the box could rectify a solution to this dilemma. I really wish I had paid more attention in physics class.
It is a really unusual problem, my Mitsubishi 60" TV came in a box 4.3 light years long, by .4777777777778 light years high. It almost didn't fit in my truck.
I hope we are all able to figure this one out. -
To get an accurate measurement, you have to do a calculation based on the fact that the distance is inversely proportional to the square of the distance.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Simply measure the height of the screen. Square that. Now measure the width of the screen. Square that. Add the two squares together. Now take the square root of that sum...That should equal 73"....Pythagorean theorem

I think I figured it out, they sent you the correct 73" TV in a box thats too small!
The solution was right in front of me the whole time (my universe is way too big).
I'm going to ponder this question further with a little (maybe alot) of crappy bourbon and a crappy cigar.
