  1. Hi! I'd appreciate any help!

My HD crashed and I have used recovery softwares which have resulted in broken AVI files.
    Example file with Gspot:

Bad chunk in frame data: Invalid length
    · Chunk: /RIFF:AVI /LIST:movi
    · Offset: 0x000ab0d0
    · Value:0x8a9b66ef
    OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
    Video: 2.08 MB (38.80%)
    Audio: 274 KB (4.99%)
    AVI Overhead: 3.01 MB (56.21%)

    [ISFT] CanonMVI06
    Codec: MJPEG

    Length: 0:07:467

When I open it with VLC I see a split second of footage only. VirtualDub can't fix it, the hex editor looks pretty normal to my knowledge. One other file I had showed lots of words like from a dictionary for a few hunred (thousand?) lines in the hex editor.

    1) Do I have any hope for the first file and its kinds?
    2) What about the file with the weird words in hex, is that totally corrupt?

    Thanks alot!

looks like the recovery software couldn't follow the sector file chains of the videos. they are not going to be fixable.

  3. Thanks aedipuss! That is valuable information because now I guess I can stop trying to fix them, accept the loss, and just try to find the ones that are still working.

    Thanks again!
