  1. Why do I get no lead-in with the batch of +R discs I'm using now? They are Verbatim, the AZO discs I've used for years. I know IMGBurn used to write a lead-in with previous spindles. I'm not getting as good burn quality as I used to, I'm guessing that's because there's no lead-in.

If I turn the OPC off I get a very short lead-in, a few seconds, used to be 30 seconds or so, with it on I get nothing. I've tried 3 different burners, they all do the same thing. With -R discs the lead-in works fine.

How do you know it's not burning a lead-in? Does it say in the log?
    Is there a log?
    Are you creating coasters?

  3. It flashes "writing lead-in" for an instant and goes straight to burning. According to the log the lead-in is 1-2 seconds. No coasters, just poor burn quality compared to previous spindles of discs.

First you say no lead-in, now you say it shows it writing a lead-in.
You are not getting coasters...so how did you come to the conclusion that the quality of the burn is lesser than your previous burns?
    I don't mean to sound like a smart-a$$ but...it's almost inevitable.

  5. It can't possibly write a lead-in in 1 second, it used to take just shy of 30 seconds. It's not writing the lead-in.

Disc scans, it's not that complicated.

    That is just plain wrong.

Without lead-in you would get coasters, simple that is.

How did I know that was coming? Oh sure you'll get a few fanboys that will come along and tell you
the vital importance of scanning a disc after it is burned, then they will argue endlessly that you are using the wrong drive to scan, the wrong software to scan, the wrong discs to scan, the wrong time of day to scan...etc etc etc.

Scanning is a waste of time. You are not smarter than IngBurn or it's creator.

All disc scanning does is make you unhappy with ALL of your burns. If you want to live your life that way, it's your choice. But as hech54 explained there are very good reasons why few of the regulars here put any trust in disc scans.

  9. I don't live my life by scans, not even. When I see there's no lead-in I check the discs and not surprisingly they are the worst burns I've seen. You can just blow that off as coincidence and say scans aren't reliable all you want, but I don't buy it. The lead-in sets the burn, it no shocker that burn quality would be poor without it.

All I want here is a fix for the problem, not a bunch of bashing.

There is a lead-in....so there is no problem. If there was no lead-in, you wouldn't be able to waste your time scanning the discs because with no lead-in, the disc would not be recognized by the drive.

If you are unhappy with ImgBurn , you could always make your own burning program.
We are anxiously awaiting the release of samijubalBurn to review it.

All DVD discs, recordable or not, must have three basic areas recorded on them: lead-in, user data and lead-out. The lead-in and lead-out areas are boundaries that indicate to a playback device where the inner and outer limits of a recording are respectively. They contain no user accessible information, but are critical to the proper functioning of a disc. The basic recording process is similar to that employed by CD-R technology.

    hech54,

You have to be careful with some people. There seems to be a wee bit of lack of understanding of the type of "subtle" humor that is employed here by some and you might end up driving potential new members away!

What does "worst burns I've seen" specifically mean? If that is DVD-video, does playback start and stop and freeze intermittently?? Is it horribly pixilated? Do the menus work as expected or not? ??? If that's a DVD-ROM with just files in it, are the files corrupted/unreadable?
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

first off, i would grab another batch of a different brand/media code +r's and see what comes of that. If they do fine then u most definitely have an issue with that batch of verbatims. Unless u have a lot of processes running in the background, I'd bet Imgburn isn't your issue.

second off, to say that scans are unnecessary or are a waste of time is ridiculous. All or most of the comments that refer to Verbatim media as the best just doesnt come from users who burn and play those discs fine..it comes from years of users scanning there discs to see what the quality results are. If that wasnt the case, everyone should go out and just by ritek's and go skipping off into lala-land and never worry about a thing. I'm not a talented program creator like Lightning UK but I've been burning discs since this all started and i scan at least 3 to 5 from each batch for the last 8 years and haven't had an issue, except, when i see that those scans arent up to par (those go off to the side or in the trash)

third, how about answering his question with answers and not talk to the user like they were a tool? All they did was ask a question and immediately the user gets bashed. Maybe another approach would have worked but I'm guessing that won't come from most of these of repliers in this thread.

Man it seems like the users in here get ruder and ruder with users asking for help

I did just have a problem with 2.5.20, and ended up uninstalling some of the latest installed programs. The burn would not complete - and I noted that memory (on a 4gb system) use was 60-70% instead of the normal 10%-15%.

That did take care of it, so you may want to look at recently installed programs or games.

You're right. You are absolutely right.
Scanning discs is a ridiculously, unnecessary waste of time....my apologies.

I am one of the most helpful people here....but I'm also pretty brutal on people who come here
and spread half-truths, misinformation and the occasional flat-out-LIE.
    Guilty as charged.
You wanna call it "rude"....be my guest.

  18. Just so you're aware of the technical side of thing, ImgBurn doesn't write any sort of 'LeadIn' on DVD media, the drive does all that stuff on its own.

What it does is look at the size of the drives internal buffer and as soon as the drive has accepted more info than that, it assumes the 'LeadIn' is done. So when you see the leadin entry in the log (and the one that follows it), that's what it means.

Some drives will keep accepting I/O telling it to write stuff to the disc until the internal buffer is full - only then will they begin to actually burn the disc. Others will start to burn after the first I/O and not accept any more until they're finished doing the leadin and writing that first chunk of data.

So basically, the 2 second leadin means nothing. The program is still working just as it always has and what you think you're experiencing is probably perfectly normal. There ARE differences between DVD-R and DVD+R for how drives behave. Maybe for DVD+R the drive does more stuff at the end of the burn, where for DVD-R it does it at the start. You'd have to take that up with the people that write the firmware.
