So I bought me a video cam, full HD etc...
result = video's look great on tv, look like crap on PC (what in god's name is the use of a digital cam?)
An extra problem, the recorded files are in de format .MTS
What would be nice if I could concert those .MTS files to WMV, MPE4, whatever so I can watch and upload the video's in some decent quality.
There is some (disapointing) software included with the cam, "everio browser" where you can write the video's to a DVD (why writing on DVD when I have several terrabytes external hard discs ??) . Also the everio player sucks, the image quality is realy bad.
SO, is there a good (free) MTS convertor ? is there (with help of the convertor?) some good format to convert the files and watch my own video's in acceptable quality on my PC ?
in some way, this unknown .mts format to me was a real sad discovery, bought my a JVC 335, storing and watching own video's on PC seems like HELL.
thx guys,
new to the videocam stuf

Try:
super
format factory
avstodvd
multiavchd
MTS isn't that unusual of a format especially for hd cameras.
You should of course save your original video files onto dvd or onto a separate harddrive so if and when you get a bluray burner you can make a full hd video from your master files.
AVCHD is probably your best though and I'm guessing if its mts it already is avchd. As long as they can fit a single layer or dual layer dvdr you can make a avchd disc that retains the high def quality. Those are only playable in most bluray players and computers - along with several settop media players like the wdtv media player - as a video file though - most settop players like wdtv do not have dvd/bluray drives but rather they play files off of hardddrives.Donatello - The Shredder? ok, thx.
I used format factory and it seems to work, but there is a serious quality problem.
When playing video's on my PC, in .mts or .avi or whatever, the quality is realy bad, lots of lines, stuttering in playing , not realy crisp sharp.
Quality is even not as good as a quality youtube movie.
My monitor is a full HD, but connected to the PC with a normal port, the HDMI port is already used by the PS3 . is this the problem ? my videocard is a gforce 8800gt 512mb
Can I convert the files in a way that they have a lower resolution or is the frequency the problem ? it is certainly frustrating to see crisp sharp images on TV and sucky quality on the pc -
You don't have your computer details listed. Do you have at least a dual core processor? If not you won't likely be able to play hd files smoothly.
Your connection to the monitor shouldn't affect the playback of the file itself only the peak resolution - in other words it should still be smooth playback just not as sharp as if you used hdmi.
What setting did you use in format factory? If you didn't keep it at 1080 or 720 it won't look nearly as good as the original file. Also if you lowered the bitrate it won't look as good either.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
My computer is an AMD athlon 4000+, 2 gig DDR ram, gforce 8800GT .
so I can understand the "stutterin" in playing video's , but what about the "lines" , I have seen a video with exactly the same problem http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l2...rent=00015.mp4 .
I didn't convert to a lower resolution, I didn't find that option in format factory yet , I would even like to downgrade the resolution to save some space (for simple fun videoshots) . Also, appart from the "lines" there is lots of "movement" in the video, like a very slow responce time from old LCD screens. also to be seen in sample video.
PS : sample video is set on low res, but does have serious idues, probably due to bad converting (program?) .
PS2 : It bogles my mind there is no software included with the cam wich can convert to easy to use formats -
could it be interlaced? See if you can convert to progressive. Frankly I am not sure how you would go about doing that in format factory or other programs as its not something I've needed to do. I would do a forum search on interlace to progressive if it indeed was shot in interlaced form.

after some trying, research and help here.
Conclusion(s)
- my PC is to slow to play full quality straight forward files from the camera
- format factory converts good to lower resolutions but I do think it "interlaces" the files, I think the cam records at 60 fps, while the max of format factory seems to be 30fps, meaning I got more fade movement in my video's .
I also have some software wich got along with the cam wich can export video's to Itunes , theys seem nice, still have some fade, but the colors are whay to warm (didn't they test this in the development of the cam?), momement still isn't perfect.
I should find a convertor who can convert on a higher fps (progressive) , but is this possible on lower resolutions?
