1) How can I copy the film only from a blu-ray disc? without all the other stuff on the disc?
2) How long does it normally take for double layer BR-R discs to come down in price? (50 dl discs for $540 is way too much).
3) What is the best program for shrinking a 50gb to 25gb film with the least loss in quality?
4) What is a good BR burner drive that burns double layer discs?
I love the BR quality but haven't made the jump yet due to the questions above, especially #2.

1) Decrypt and copy the disc to your hard drive. AnyDVDHD, DVDFab, DVDFabHDDecrypter (free), and DVDFabPasskey (free while it's beta) can rip Blu-Rays. Take your pick. I've been using DVDFabPasskey for several months and like it. Then use a Blu-Ray to Blu-Ray tool such as BDRB, AVCHDCoder, RipBot, et. al. to extract and re-encode main movie to BD25. Look to the left in the Guides section to learn how to use them.
If you prefer MKVs, you can use MakeMKV as suggested. It will decrypt and extract the main movie, you can de-select whatever audio and subtitle tracks are unwanted
2) Dunno.
3) I prefer BDRebuilder; it's basically a front-end for several free tools. Other similar programs (as above) use essentially the same set of tools, so it's a matter of preference and what layout you like best.
4) Others can address that.
Good luck.
[EDIT] Unless you have a truly gigantic display and very sharp eyes, there's no way you'll be able to tell the difference between the original and a BDRB encoded BD25. Besides, you'll find that movie-only will often fit a BD25 without re-encoding. Other movies will fit, movie-only, if you're willing to also extract the core audio rather than using DTS-HD or True-HD audio. BDRB will happily do all of that for you if you select the appropriate options in settings, and only re-encode the video if necessary.
I usually back up my Blu-Rays to BD9 (double-layer DVDR). To give you some idea, I find it very hard to distinguish a BD9 backup from the original on a 47" 1080p HDTV set. That's for an average length movie (~ 2 hrs).Last edited by fritzi93; 15th Sep 2010 at 18:57.
