    Hi everyone,

Ready to purchase a new blu-ray writer and really know nothing about which ones are the most reliable. Could you please help me here. The most important thing I want to be able to do is to back up my costly original blu-ray titles on either a single or double layer discs for the kids. This way they won't be able to damage my expensive originals. Of the three that I have listed below please let me know your favorite. Or if you have a favorite that I haven't listed please feel free to recommend it. I also would like to know your favorite software that you use for this. Any other things I may need to do to my computer would be welcome as I haven't a clue how to do this. Thanks everyone for your help, I promise, I really appreciate your help and your time. Have a great weekend.

    Pioneer BDR-205
    LG WH10LS30K
    Lite On IHBS112-29
    Thank You,

    GolfNut

If you don't already know you'll need anydvdhd to rip blurays. Also imgburn SHOULD be able to burn a bluray sturcture. If not you can use multiavchd to create and I believe it burns also - if not you should be able to use the outputted multiavchd bluray structure and burn as data with imgburn.

I don't have a bluray burner yet but I do work with avchd and I do have a bluray rom so I have worked with high def.

I'm thinking you probably want to use BDRebuilder to backup your discs. And it does require the use of AnyDVDHD which is not free. multiAVCHD usually works, but a few of us (this includes me) have BluRay players that can't play what it produces. We had another post about this already today. And if you are one of those unlucky people it will not be an option for you. BDRebuilder has a significant chance of producing a disc that your player will play. Remember that multiAVCHD is not an encoder, so it can't help you to shrink BD rips down to single or double layer anyway.

I would recommend that you avoid any of the BluRay LTH media. They are cheaper than normal BluRay blanks, but reports are that the compatibility of these discs is just awful. I don't burn BluRay discs, but if I did I would buy Verbatim but being clear to avoid their LTH line of discs. I have a vague memory that Pioneer makes good BluRay burners, but maybe someone with real experience can comment.

  5. Yeah, you need a decrypter, and the regular AnyDVD won't do, you need the more expensive AnyDVDHD.

There are alternatives, however. DVDFab can decrypt Blu-Rays, and the free version, DVDFabHDDecrypter can as well. The free version does not get immediate updates for newer protections, and is limited to full disc only.

For the past several months I've been using DVDFabPasskey, which works in the background at driver level, like AnyDVDHD. Passkey is still free while it's beta and I haven't yet found a disc it can't handle.

    Good luck.

20% off sale at the moment for ANYDVD HD...the sale expires on Sept. 12. Best ripper for Bluray discs & best bang for da buck for what it can do. Just my 2 cents!

The Pioneer 205 has been the favorite over at myce.com for quite a while now. Second choice would be the LG. I have an LG GGW-H20L and have been pleased with its performance over the last couple of years. The Lite-on drives are not in the same league yet.

The Pioneer 206 has been released in Asia, but I haven't seen it in the US yet. It isn't much of an update as it uses the same chipset as the 205. There are some differences in the pcb and power regulation.
