i would just like to know what would be the reason to get the older dv-333 over the dv-343 or vis versa. thanks in advance.

The DV343 has newer/better circuitry. For example, with the bug fiasco in TMPG 12c/d, DV333 played in the left side of the screen. The DV343 had no problems playing it. Of course, the bug doesn't exist anymore but I'm sure they must've updated some other stuff too.

no, i've still seen left-side SVCDs on my 343. it's all a matter of size and SDE tags, and i never had TMPG 12c/d. i only used original beta 12 and 12f.
if the 333 really does handle mpeg streams up to bitrates of 3000, that may be the way to go. because i did some ATI captures where the peak went to 2500 (video) just for a frame or two, and there's a slight decode error and it slowly drifts out of sync from there on. there still may be some mistake with what i'm doing, but exceeding the peak is the best explanation i've got to this point. but check with someone who actually has a 333 to see if that's true. i'd actually expect all the pioneer mid-range models to have the same vcd limit (525, 333, 343) but i can't say for sure. you might want to look at the 3-disc changer that supposedly plays miniDVD too. (302D or something).
but if you can't say for sure that the 333 plays higher average bitrates, go with the newer one.
