  1. I can hardsub an .srt into an .mkv file using MeGUI + Avisynth, but I assume encoding degrades overall quality everytime.

    Shouldn't there be a way of keeping the original encoding specs while encoding only the area that surrounds the subtitle itself?

    Frames without subtitles would not be reencoded at all, and the others would encode much faster...

    Does this make any sense?

    Nope ... and I don't see that happening ever ... go with a container which supports subtitle inclusions ... mkv = no re-encoding

    re-mux for soft sub on mp4 or mkv (easier) container.
