Is there any tool that will let me take a DVR-MS HD file with dolby 5.1 and just edit a clip (a song) with out converting to another format. I want to edit songs from a concert and play back with WMC7. WLMM 2010 works but with no dolby 5.1 and very low volume. WLMM 2011 wants to encode the file first (19Gb too long) Any advice or free software suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Is it possible to go back tp WLMM 2010?

I'm in the same boat, looking to edit some shows from WMC, not necessarily reencoding. Still looking for a solution. :/

You could also try DVRMSToolbox if you need a free solution. I tried it a while ago and found it wan't all that I needed, but a new version came out since then. I haven't tried it yet.

If that doesn't work out for you, there is the free route, that I use, but it is more involved. GraphStudio to change to a .ts container + TSSniper to edit.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I attempted to try DVRMSToolbox, but the resulting file in mpeg was full of high motion artifacts, and the GUI isn't that intuitive for a nonprogrammer like me.

DVR-MS Editor is looking to be exactly what I want, to be able to edit and simply recompile the file without reencoding (hard drive space is not a factor these days, and you want as high a bitrate you can get for HD). Unfortunately DVR-MS Editor seems to be only able to navigate by Seconds, making perfect cuts seemingly impossible, unless one has a way of inputting a specific Frame in the Segments window. It doesn't seem to like you just putting in random decimals.

I also tried Windows Movie Maker Live as suggested on another site, however, while I did like the quality of the render, it had a weird glitch where the video jumped to a few seconds before the beginning of the next clip, but still had the audio from the first clip going.

I'll let you know my results.

Most free MPEG-2 editors only cut on GOP boundaries, about every 15 frames or 1/2 second intervals. TSSniper does that as well. The problem I found was that other free MPEG-2 editors did not maintain A/V sync or had trouble importing HD video.

Here's and overview of my process if DVR-MS Editor doesn't pan out:
    1. Convert the MCE files to .ts format with GraphStudio, using filters installed by DVRMSToolbox.
    2. When the conversion is finished, open the .ts file in TSSniper and edit.
    3. Convert to the desired end format, whatever that may be.

How to use GraphStudio to convert from .wtv or dvr-ms to .ts:
    1. Open GraphStudio.
    2. Use Graph->Insert Filter to bring up a list of DirectShow filters installed on the PC
    3. Select Moonlight M71 Muxer, from the list. (It comes with DVRMSToolbox)
    4. Select the matching file writer filter or dump filter, Moonlight DumpPOS (It was also installed by DVRMSToolbox)
    5. Choose a location for the output file using the "Browse" button, and enter the output file name and ".ts" for the file extention.
    6. Drag and drop to connect the M71 Out pin on the multiplexer filter to the Input pin on the output file box.
    7. Select File->Add Media File to add the .wtv/dvr-ms recording to be converted. (Use "All Files" for the "Files of Type" option to list the DVR-MS/.wtv files as well as the default video file types.) Connections to the Moonlight M71 Muxer filter will be made automatically.
    8. If converting a DVR-MS file go to step 9. If converting a .wtv file, delete the unnecessary filters leaving the .wtv file (the leftmost filter in the graph), the PBDA DTFilter, the PBDA DTFilter 0001, the Moonlight M71 Muxer, and the Moonlight dump filter.
    9. Start the graph by clicking the green arrow button in the controls are under the menu bar. While the conversion is taking place, the stop button (a square) is red.

To remove filters or connections from the graph, first select by clicking on them. (Once selected, a filter/connection is highlighted in blue.) Pressing the "Delete" key on the keyboard removes selected items from the graph. This is handy to know if you make a mistake.
