Ok, I want to know if it is possiable to create a DVD menu for multiple divx files. I have been looking for days and all i have been able to find is a really basic mENu. When I say basic I mean, I mean basic. It is just a list of the files on the disc. In fact I would not even really call it a menu. Anyways I have heard that Dr. Divx might be coming out with something in the near future ,but I want to know if their is an app out right now that can do it.

I DO NOT WANT TO CONVERT MY FILES!!! I WANT TO KEEP THEM IN .AVI FORMAT NOT MPEG-2!

You should be able to do that with Divx 6, but you would have to find out if your Divx DVD player can use them. This link explains a little: http://www.betanews.com/article/DivX_6_Format_Offers_Alternative_to_DVD/1118867931

EDIT: A better link to Divx6 menu features:http://www.divx.com/divx/advanced.php

I use Divx 6.1, but I never messed with menus, etc. Looks like it does subtitles and multiple audio tracks also. I use Xvid most of the time.

My Dvd player supports divx and I it claims that I can update the divx codec. So assuming that I can play it, do I have to upgrade all my divx files to divx 6? Is it even possiable to upgrade a divx file with an old codec to a new divx codec or what?

My computer is really slow and so I want to avoid conversions, if I can.

Don't know if you can repackage older Divx to Divx6 with menus. I suspect you are up for a re-encode which ever way you go.

Well you know what they say... Assumption is the mother of all **** ups.

There are very few DivX Ultra certified players out there. Which I believe is the certification required for menus. Most just support xsubs and multiple audio streams.

The menus are part of the divx media format and are therefor indipendant of codecs. DivX 6, the codec is backwards compatibile with DivX 5. It even uses the same fourCC, so to a player there is really no difference. Not sure about DivX3 and menus though.

So I can use Divx 6 to add menus using some app (I am assuming), but the dvd player has to be more than divx compatiable? It has to be Divx ultra compatiable? Am I understanding this correctly?

Should be details on certifications and a list of players at the DivX site.

  13. I am interested in creating a menu (frontend) to organize and stylize the DVD-ROM file system read on my Philips DVP5990/37 which supports DivX ULTRA (AVI) as well as Jpeg, HD Jpeg, MP3, Mpeg, WMA, WMA etc...
By default, when you put in a disc (DVD-ROM or CD-ROM) without a menu it displays the file system like Windows Explorer does but you are stuck with a limited amount of characters, making it difficult to know which file to select.

I am looking for XP software that will enable me to easily build custom menu templates from my own jpegs for backgrounds and thumbnails as well as have 100% control over the layout.

My primary need is to build menus to display six thumbnails of six 700mb avi movies, for instance all six Star Wars movies on one DVD (No, I don't care that at 700MB a movie the quality is only VHS or less). I do NOT want to convert these files, as I have already confirmed that they will play on the player I will be using.

It would also be nice to have a menu for mixed content, a custom interface to navigate and play/view/listen to the various formats.

There is very little that will create Divx menus, and none of them fit your requirements. They either take forever to create - inferring a re-encode or at least a very long muxing process - or they are not intuitive to use.

If you want to play, start here

  15. Thanks, guns1inger.
I was affraid of that, after countless google searches over the years with very little info.
DivXMediaBuilder looks like it may do some of what I need.

Basically, there isn't market. Not enough players support it, the effort isn't worth the results, and the ubiquity of HDD based players means that this isn't likely to change. Personally, I don't need a fancy menu. A list of file names is enough to find the track I need.

  17. I don't want to shorten the file names on my discs just so I can know which file I am using. This is especially annoying when there are many files with the same titles. For instance, say I want to put a bunch of South Park episodes on a disc with Family Guy episodes. All I see is the first part of the file like: "SOUTHPAR.AVI" instead of "South Park - Make Love Not Warcraft (S10E08).avi" I don't want to find the 8th file named SOUTHPAR.AVI to play that episode. So it isn't necessarily that I have to have a nice fancy menu, it is that I want to navigate more easily.

I personally love my DVD player. My Philips player's got a USB port on the front. I usually have a 500GB hard drive with a lot of moves plugged into it. It is also great if I want to transfer something quickly to a flash drive to watch on the TV. Samsung also makes a few inexpensive DivX ULTRA players. You can get one from Wal-Mart for about $60.

Anyways, everyone's got their preferences, I guess. Thanks again for leading me to DivXMediaBuilder.

I haven't had a player that couldn't read full file names, hence not having a need for menus, but then I haven't seen the Philips models over here.

  19. I knew it existed! I found exactly what I was looking. It is made by Pegasys Inc., the makers of TMPGEnc. The program is called "TMPGEnc Authoring works 4" It is not free, unfortunately but there is a trial version. The description specificaly says it works with the DivX ULTRA format.

    http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/taw4.html

It just goes to show you, if you can think of it, someone , somewhere has already made it a reality.

Have you tried it yet. It has been around for quite some time, and people have commented that it has the same issues as the others - if it isn't re-encoding, it takes just as long to simply remux.

Yep, last time i tried it, it was taking so long, like hours, i just assumed it was re-encoding all the files so i said screw it and just make data disc's and read the file names.

It would be nice to have a program what would make dvd style menus for Divx/Xvid files without re-encoding the files & taking half a day....

  22. Hi

Just wondering if anyone has found a solution to this as I have the same problem

I have brought a toshiba divx dvd player. I have spend hours upon hours trying to find a way to create a menu for my divx files like you get on a dvd

I thought I had found the answer when I downloaded divx author . I created the menu and spent hours converting all the files to divx only to find when I burnt the disk & put it in the DVD player the menu was not there & chapters I had created did not work. I know the menu is there caus when I play the dvd on my computer the menu appears, however when I play it in my dvd player I just get the windows explorer type screen with no menu. Very frustrating!!

So has anyone found a way to create a dvd style menu for divx files that plays in a divx certified dvd player?? Any help on this is much appreciated as its driving me mad!!!!!

    Thanks

    Aaron

For those wanting to simply get more characters visible on filenames there's a thread dedicated to the 5990\37 (I love mine too...).

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/293844-New-firmware-for-5990-37-Thanks-to-vb6rocod

I've been using that firmware (with multiple very good updates) for a couple years now and its been great. The best feature of which is 40(+?) character filenames. See the thread for full info.

PS: I'd start at the latest post and work backwards... its huge and very informative.
