I am using virtualdub with deshaker to clean up some vids. I saw SOMEWHERE a vid on how to calculate the rolling shutter since every camera is different. I just cant seem to find it now. Anyone know how to do this?

rolling shutter is an effect of objects moving across the field of view. it is more a factor of the speed of the object and it's direction than the cmos chip being used, since 2 objects with different speeds using the same sensor would need different correction.

  3. But a deshaker knows what speed the camera was moving.

I would find a smooth horizontal panning shot with an obvious vertical edge and just try different values until you restore the edge to vertical.

    Found this: http://www.guthspot.se/video/deshaker.htm

Ok, I do remember seeing it here too (at the deshaker website) , but I didnt quite understand what he meant.

    Code:
twice), which is what you need. If you recorded progressive video, you'll need two consecutive frames instead. Then, find the horizontal position (x-pos) of the vertical line at 5 places, namely at St = top of still frame, Sb = bottom of still frame, Ft = top of first panning field/frame, Fb = bottom of first panning field/frame, Nt = top of next panning field/frame. Now, the rolling shutter amount should be calculated as: 100 * (Fb - Ft + St - Sb) / (Nt - Ft).

"5 places" what is that? And the rest is also a little confusing.

just don't see it working. on a slow smooth pan there is no rolling shutter effect. medium pan- a little. fast pans is where i shows up as vertical lines recorded as diagonal, not shaking left and right.

he's talking about drawing a graph of a single vertical line and measuring how much it deviates from vertical in a pan shot.
