You'll most likely end up with flv files. In this case you'll need to convert them as most hardware players don't recognize flv (flash video).

What I have used that works well is format factory. You can either output to mpeg2 for regular dvd creation or directly to vob files in dvd format that you can burn.

You may get lucky and some sites will be downloaded as mp4 files. If this is the case you may be able to play the original files on something like a ps3 or xbox 360 without converting. However that can be hit or miss because both consoles have strict guidelines for the type of mp4 files they will recognize.

But yes you will need to download them first with a program like streamtransport. There are many others out there as well.

  4. Thanks for both your replies. I have downloaded streamtransport and I have downloaded a video from hulu and it is a flv file.

I have just downloaded Format Factory, but I don't see "output to mpeg2," but I do see "All to MP4" that you mentioned in your post. Will this work or do I need to choose something different so that I can burn the file to a DVD to watch on tv using a dvd player? Thanks.

What version are you using? In version 2.3 scroll down the left screen to the bottom and you'll see options for mpg or vob

Then you can set the output for the dvd mode of your choosing. There are templates and you can change individual items.

  6. I am using ver 2.3. I was looking for mpeg 2 and not "all to MPG." I will play with Format Factory a little.

By the way, what are some of the other programs like streamtransport? Thanks again for your help.

Antbar is one that I bumped into - not listed on this website. There is also getit.

There are more of course. However streamtransport is one of the few that circumvent the rtmpe protection many streaming services employ (not sure on the exact acronym there but its designed to make it more difficult to download the original video file).

  8. I never realized how many different video formats there are. I was trying to do what I thought was a simple project for my sister.

I have used format factory and converted the flv file to mp4, mpg, and vob files. I am trying to burn any of them to a dvd so that they can be used in a dvd player to watch on tv. I use image burn when I copy movies to dvd's but image burn doesn't recognize them the way I typically burn them. Do I need to use a different burning program or I am just doing something wrong?

Another question I have is, what format are dvd's or the files when they are Audio_TS and Video_TS files? Thanks again.

If this is your first foray into dvd making you should look at the links above (from the left of the screen).

You can use freeware dvdauthorgui to make a simple dvd with your vob files (they are ready to burn dvd files but need to be in the appropriate folder structure inside a video_ts folder). You can make it more complex as you get more experienced.

Regular mp4 and mpg files will not be playable in basic dvd players. Some will but many will not - also the ones that say they can play certain files require strict profiles in order for them to work. Making a real dvd will avoid that hassle (assuming you have decent blank discs - and by real dvd I mean the proper structure, it won't be physically identical to a factory dvd, those are pressed to exacting standards so they work in every dvd player, most home burning should work everywhere but some older players are picky on the type of disc they like).

Or use dvd flick to convert your flv,mp4 files directly to a DVD (video_ts folder with vob,ifo files).

Does streamtransport support protected versions of RTMP (like the one now used by VH1)?

  12. Thank you both for your quick replies. And yes, (how could you tell) that this is really my first foray into dvd making. I will read the info from the links you have provided. How come there are so many different formats and no one standard?

I use Verbatim blank dvd's. Currently I have dvd+r discs. Are the + or - discs better and what is the difference between the two? Also, do you recommend brands other than Verbatim?

Well for the computer playback standards aren't as important. Well I should say each file type has its own standards but no one is THE format to use. Depends on the application you need - file size - intended use - high def or standard def.... etc...

For disc based hardware machines DVD is a standard as is Bluray. Both have specific requirements but are flexible to a degree. VCD is pre dvd and also has its standards to follow.

Verbatim is a quality brand and you should be ok with them. - or + isn't a big factor anymore. Unless your dvd player is really old you shouldn't have a problem with either one.

  14. Thanks yoda313 and baldrick for all your help. I downloaded dvd flick also and I was able to copy the tv show to dvd and to my amazement it worked. Thanks again for the help and education. I have a lot of reading to do.

    Always glad to help.

The more you read the more you can do. And if you stick with it enough you'll be able to contribute to the forum yourself someday

  16. Many times you will find that the stream is a flash stream.
In those cases it is really easy- simply go to your internet cache files and you will find the file there.
Sometimes it will not have the .flv suffix, so just add it.
Just try plating the file on flash players like FLVplayer (which is free).
