I'll clarify. I read the documentation included in DVD Lab Pro and it doesn't seem to cover what I'm looking for. I'd like a menu that has three buttons: one that says "mono", one that says "surround" and one that says "play". What I'd like to do but can't figure out is how to play a sound effect from the film when either the "mono" or "surround" buttons are clicked. I obviously want the mono effect to be triggered when "mono" is clicked and the effect in surround to be triggered when "surround" is clicked... allowing the listener to hear the difference.
How can this be done? Is it even worth the effort?

The DVD spec doesn't allow for a simple solution in a single menu, and also complicates things by forcing you to have the same audio format as menu for your first audio track. So if you first audio track is mono (or two track AC3) then the menu audio should also be two track AC3. If the first audio track is 5.1 then the menu should use 5.1. If not, you can get problematic playback on some players.
That said, the simplest method is to create a video clip for each audio track. Put the clip wit the same audio format as the menu in the same VTS, and put the other clip is a different VTS. Create a button for each audio type and link it to the appropriate clip. You will have to use a bridge for the clip in the other VTS. Have the clips return control to this menu when they are done. User selects button, clip plays, user comes back to menu.
If you wanted to get fancier, you could create two menus that are identical but in different VTS. One has the mono audio as the background, the other has the surround. When the user selects an option, the appropriate menu is chosen - basical;ly a switched menu that changes audio and not the background.Read my blog here.

Thanks for the reply. I don't feel it necessary (or simple enough) to go through all that without tearing my hair out, so I'll scratch the idea

Well, the clips are ready, in ac3 form. Both are identical in every respect, except the one is 2.0 Mono and the other is 5.1 Surround. Well, the only other difference between the two is that the mono one is 192 and the surround is 448.

Create a menu page that looks the way you want it to look, but with no audio.
Create a second VTS.
Create a copy of the menu, and move it into the second VTS.
Add one the audio tracks to the menus. If the first VTS contains other movies and menus, use the audio that matches those titles. Add the other audio to the other menu.
Link the two menus via buttons and bridges.
Fin.Read my blog here.

Hm. Unfortunately, I must not know what I'm doing. The menu shows up and starts looping the sound effect endlessly. Darn, I should've taken note of if it was the mono or surround effect, but I forgot and already deleted the dvd test. However, I still have the assets if I want to try again, which I do. Can you possibly clarify some of the steps you mentioned? For instance, I don't know how to copy the first menu and move it in to the second one. The buttons and bridges step leaves me a bit confused too. I'd really like to get this working, so please, if you have the time, can you be a bit more specific... as if I'm a Kindergartener
Thanks,
Justin
