  1. I'm trying to capture few old home NTSC VHS tapes, using Pinnacle capture card and multisystem VHS recorders (SONY SLV-E160EE and Panasonic NV-HD640) (I'm in Russia). But whatever I do I'm having only b\w picture. Is there a capturing programm or converter that can help me?

    thanks in advance

Multisystem machines do not output a true signal. You will need a capture card that can capture the "hybrid" or "quasi" signal (rare) or a DVD recorder that can record the "hybrid" or "quasi" signal (also rare), or an in-line converter between the output VCR and your capture device.

  3. Funny enough I just made some discoveries on this infernal ntsc/pal issue and they are:-

The Philips Euro dvd recorder 3570H :-

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-DVR3570H-DVD-recorder-DIVX-160-GB-Hard-disk-/30041915543...item45f26085e8

captures pal 60 as ntsc, now...............it records to the hard disc and allows copying to the dvd disc but then freezes and needs unplugging and plugging back in, dunno why.

The Pioneer multi system dvdr's also capture PAL60 as ntsc.

as I think do the euro Pioneer dvdr's.

  5. Oh I forgot to mention, last time I looked Panasonic dvd recorder/VCR combos in the UK can be switched pal/ntsc in the menu, so if the tapes are not copy protected thats the way to go.

Or you can find a true NTSC VCR, capture and author an NTSC DVD. That will play in PAL DVD players to PAL60 for viewing.

  7. Chances are that if you look at the instruction manual, box and/or deck itself, you'll find a logo for "NTSC 4.43" - this is the hybrid. Basically, 59.94i but using the PAL color carrier frequency. If the logo says "NTSC 3.58" then it will be "true" NTSC. I had a PAL Sony deck that let me select either option from NTSC playback. I also had a pretty shitty multistandard VCR that did output all formats in their true form. You can get an in-line converter (from NTSC 4.43 to NTSC 3.58) but it may not be as an affordable option as a capture card that can capture NTSC 4.43. Or a standard NTSC deck (as edDV suggests, too).
