  1. Hi, I have downloaded several files, and they were formatted in MKV (Matroska Video) file. I can play them on my notebook, but to play them on PS3 and LCD TV, I have to convert them to AVI file. And the problem begun.

I have used several video converters (Xilisoft, SUPER, ULead) to convert those MKV vids, but I kept losing the subtitle. Then I use MPC to create subtitle file then blend it while converting the MKV file to AVI file. Yes, I have the subtitle, but the text is way too big and too stiff compare to the original on those MKV files.

This is my first time dealing with MKV files, and they have given me a headache.

Could someone recommend a software that is capable of converting MKV file to AVI file including its subtitle?

    Appreciate the inputs.

You may not have to convert them to AVI files to play them on the PS3. It can play a wide range of formats, and it may be that you just have to repackage the mkvs into something the PS3 likes.

Simplest place to start is TSMuxer. Load the mkv and output an M2TS file instead. The PS3 will happily play this from USB drives or if they are burned to a DVD. No conversion, just shifting the contents from one container to another. This is the solution for mkvs that contain AVC video. The only issue with this solution is DTS audio. The PS3 will not play DTS audio from files on USB drives, only if it is in the AVCHD or DVD formats on a DVD disc.

Solution 2 is MKV2VOB, which also repackages the files. I prefer TSMuxer, but there are many ways to skin a cat.

Solution 3 is MultiAVCHD or AVCHDCoder. Both of these will take your MKV files and create AVCHD format structures for burning to DVD blanks. These are playable in the PS3, and you can have menus (handy for episodes) etc. This may take longer, as many MKV files do not contain compliant video, so some re-encoding will occur (not an issue if the resolution is 1280 x 720, but often it is cropped). Expect 4 hours for an average encode on a base level Quad Core CPU.
