I have successfully captured SD material from my Canon XM2/GL2 through Firewire for years, sending tapes into Avid Liquid 7.2 for editing. Now I have upgraded to HDV with the Canon XH-A1S and HV40 cameras, I cannot capture my 1080i recorded material because Liquid tells me 'Device Not Ready'.

I have changed the output of both cameras from 'auto' to HDV, still no joy. However when I change this to 'DV', the cameras are both recognised by Windows and Liquid. Switching back to HDV, the cameras are no longer recognised - in fact the 'found new hardware' wizard pops up. I need to output/capture in 1080i HDV.

Did not receive any driver software with either camera. My Firewire is Via VT6307. XH-A1S uses a new 6pin > 6pin I bought for it, while HV40 uses my tried and trusted 4pin > 6pin that I used with my XM2/GL2. Remember the XH-A1S is still 'seen' with the camera in DV mode, so I doubt the problem is that new cable.

    Appreciate any help !

Thank you but I knew the capturing tool was not the problem - Liquid should accept an HDV signal.

I solved the issue, it turned out Windows XP was lacking some important drivers which should have been included in SP2 (I'm on SP3 now) for handling HDV material.

The drivers are: avcstrm.sys, mstape.sys and mstape.inf - these can be found in Driver Cache folder or via Google.
