I have read discussions about adding subtitles using vobsub, but the examples seem to be from AVI files.
Is there a way of doing it with this process?
1) SmartRipper
2) DVD2AVI (creates vobs that tmpegen can read)
3) tmpegen to create mpg2 file to burn SVCD with NERO
I find this process gives great results. But I want to include subtitles on a foreign film. Is there a way using this method to get the subtitles?
I suppose I could first create an AVI with tmpgenc, then use vobsub, then use tmpgenc to generate mpg2, but I was hoping for a more direct approach with the same level of quality.

Frameserve with Avisynth or VirtualDub and use the vobsub filter. No need to save a avi.

Thanks for the info. However, I'm not sure how I can do this w/o an avi, as when I try to open files with VirtualDub, it seems to require an AVI. I use DVD2AVI, which makes a .d2v file, which tmpgenc can use to create the final mpg (mpg 2) file for using Nero to burn a SVCD.
Using DVD2AVI after it creates the .d2v file, I tried selecting File/Save as AVI, and if I use DivX, it seems to encode the entire movie to a DivX AVI. However, this is the step I wanted to avoid if possible.
Is it possible to use the process I'd described, SmartRipper, then DVD2AVI to create the .d2v file, and then from there, frameserve with VirtualDub to create either the final mpg file (mpg2) or something that tmpgenc can use to create the mpg?
Can anyone supply a few details or a link to explain this? Thanks. -
i knows theres a way to open the project file in vdub. i think you use the VFAPI codec reader to make a persudo avi and then open it. i dont recomend doing the audio

I have Virtual Dub running in Frameserver mode, and it's placing the the subtitles. Now, when I set up Virtual Dub, it asks for a Frameserver name, and the name of the .VDR signpost file for AVIFile handler. I give it that.
Now, I can't get Tmpgenc to recognize a file to process into the mpg 2 format. When I setup tmpgenc, what filename do I point it to? I can't get it to recognize anything that the VirtualDub frameserver is providing.
