  1. Stop me if you've heard this before, but I want to encode VOB files straight to AVI with hardsubs. I convert VOB to AVI with AutoGK, rip the subtitles with Subrip, and then re-encode the AVI file with the subtitles using Avirecomp. Not only is it time consuming, but I have to convert the video file twice (VOB to AVI, then AVI to AVI w/ subs), thus losing quality. Also, I would like to convert straight to AVI without encoding with xvid or divx.

I know some of you are thinking "just use mkv" or "what's wrong with xvid?" and I have nothing against either of those...so long as it's on a computer. But, to be honest, I don't like watching anything on my computer. I sit in front of one all day, the last thing I want to do is sit in front of it for another 2 hours. The "non-xvid" request springs from the fact that I like watching videos on my psp too, but the psp doesn't support xvid. So, if I want to watch some of my converted videos on my psp, i have to convert it, AGAIN.

If anybody could help or at least point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciated. If you think I'm a fool and I should just stopping wasting your time, tell me that too so I know that I'll just keep doing what I've been doing. Thanks in advance.

Autogk can hardcode subs. Open the vts_01_0.ifo in Autogk instead of just the vob. Or if you just have the vob then Hit CTRL-F and load the subtitle file.

A cheap way to hardsub a video:
MPEG2Source("your_indexed_video.d2v") # this is the indexed file created by DGIndex
    TextSub("your_sub.ass")
(don't forget to specify the full path of the .d2v and the subtitle)
After that, choose an xvid encoder / x264 encoder (highly recommended) and... wait for the result to come out. Good luck

so if i set the input file to the .ifo file and select the chapter i want (it's a series of 7 episodes) it will do both the video AND audio along with the subtitles? If so, that's great, and I've been doing this conversion thing all wrong!

  5. well I tried it with autogk and it worked...kinda. The video, audio, and subtitles are there, but the subtitles are out of sync. The subtitles begin right when the video starts, so it's off by a few seconds. Also, there doesn't seem to be any gaps, it's just one subtitle after another.

Did you open the ifo? Or vob?

You can also use FairUse Wizard to easily, select serie, hardcode subtitles.

Yeah, I opened the ifo. Everything worked, but the subtitles were just a few seconds out of sync. I'll check out this FairUse Wizard.

    Thanks for all the help!
