  1. Hi,

Just bought DVP5990/F7 (latest firmware 31) for a friend and placed a disk with .AVI file:

film goes on, but no sound. My several years old DVP5982 does NOT have such problem.

    Is it fixable?

Do other avi files play with sound on this device? It could be something as simple as the sound output set to ssid, or digital coax.

Good idea, thanks, let me try - I've read earlier that some AVI files are "compressed" in such a way that DVD player shows movie but there is no sound (with my case of regular cord with video/left-audio/right-audio), but your idea is good.

Ok, I've just tried another CD with different movie in AVI format - same thing, no sound.

I checked in Setup of the player now - Audio page states regular Analog Audio output, no digital sound (it's grayed out)
    What is 'ssid'?

  4. Use GSpot or MediaInfo to determine what codec is used for the sound. The 5990 won't play all possible audio codecs.

What is ssid? I wouldn't worry about it. Is the analog audio output set to "stereo"? On a side note I remember an earlier model that had a glitch try setup->Volume and decrease it to 19. Next, I agree a codec could be responsible, that is unless DVDs are also playing without sound.

  6. Thanks, lowellriggsiam, your idea to try more movie CDs helped me - I stopped trying (it was at work with some hi-tech TV monitor / computer monitor in the conference room) and tried again at home with "normal" TV - same CD works just fine, sound is OK.

So it's probably some audio input thing of that large monitor!

    Thanks for help!

P.S. For future cases if I have similar problem:
jagabo, I started here with the sticky topic about problems so I did ran GSpot - but did not see there anything listed in that sticky topic - it even did not tell me what audio codec was used in my .avi (did it?) -

  7. Your audio is AC3, 5.1 channel. The Philips 5990 can play that. But be sure the player is set to output the audio to the correct place. It sounds like you are using the analog red/white RCA outputs for audio.

    Thanks! (yes, it's RCA outputs)

  9. I wasn't able to find any setting on the 5990 that would disable the analog audio outputs. It's always possible that the particular file you are trying to play has something wrong with it. Try other videos, movie DVDs, and audio CDs to verify the RCA outputs are working.

  10. As it works fine at home, I am sure that it's not 5990 analog audio outputs, but rather analog audio inputs of that special monitor (TV/computer screen) in the conferece room at work - even though I tried both RCA inputs there...

  11. Ah, I see. That monitor may need to be set to take audio from its RCA ports rather than from HDMI or SPDIF.
